Hooked up the belts and pulley for my 71 charger over the weekend. Engine is a 400. The service manual that i have is a little vague on the setup. Do I have this correct? I noticed on some pictures online that some people have what i think is a belt tensioner? Do I need this or do you keep the belts tight by putting pressure on the alternator and power steering pump while you tighten the bolts?

They look normal to me.

Some cars had belt tensioners but most of mine did not.

My Imperial has the AC compressor hugging the left head and the alternator a bit farther right than yours. The two belts jump that span without a tensioner or idler. If they're not perfectly matched they will come off with enthusiastic driving.

You'll notice that the P/S bracket has a 1/2" square hole near the pivot bolt, this is for a 1/2" drive breaker bar to apply tension to the bracket to tension the belt while tightening the bolt(s).

The alternator belt is tensioned by merely grabbing the bottom of the alternator and pulling up/outboard while tightening the bolt(s).

Belt alignment is best checked with a straight edge against the face of the WP pulley sheave...the belt might be more aligned in the rear alternator pulley sheave...straight edge will tell.

You might want to also round up the spacer that goes between the alternator and the head. Without it you can mess up the alternator when the pivot bolt is tightened.

Alt belt might line up better on the back groove. It looks like its off.The spacers can be a pain. With stuuf being changed over years you sometimes have to play with them to get align right.Rocky

With the double pulley on the alternator, the belt will probably be off a bit in either groove. That system was designed for the single pulley alternator, and the belt alignment between the single pulley and the double pulley are different.

Most of the time, either the rear groove or the front groove will provide a better alignment, just not perfect. With incorrect alignment, consistent high rpm could cause belt failure or it could cause throwing off the belts. Normal driving will probably not cause an issue. Gene

FYI one guy mentioned using a straight piece of alum tubing (3/8 iirc) layed in the pulley grooves to check his alignment and another guy used a laser pointer same way
