A few weeks back I painted my steering column parts with Rustoleum Textured paint. Since I'm not "restoring" the car, getting a perfect match to the factory finish isn't critical. However, I was concerned with the durability of the Rustoleum product. There is also more "gloss" to the Rustoleum product than original. Some have also mentioned that the texture is coarser but this is more dependent on the number of caots and thickness.

Since doing those parts there was a large Mopar show up here in Canada and there was a vendor there selling virtually every Mopar color in rattle cans. This is genuine automotive paint which he's had mixed and canned to original specs. For the "show special" price of $20 I figured I had nothing to lose by buying a can and redoing the parts.

The end result, in my opinion, is that this stuff is probably AS GOOD AS any other product claiming to give an "original" finish. But in most cases at a fraction of the cost. There is easily enough product in the can to do an entire dash and the other textured components.

In my case, I primed the parts with a standard primer then shot two coats. My texture is a little coarser than original. The supplier's suggestion is to prime with an appropriately tinted primer, in this case black, and shoot a single coat of texture. I suspect this would yield a perfect finish.

Below are a bunch of photos of both the product and my finished pieces.

Here are some comparison photos. The strip is the original 46 year old finish. The column piece is the newly painted item. You can see the heavier texture but the level of gloss is pretty much bang on.

These photos show the difference between the above product and Rustoleum on the steering wheel. The Rustoleum does have more gloss to it.

Not bad. Is this a Canada only product?

Are you planning on taking another shot at it using their recommendations?

1) what do you mean "Canada only" ? email him, I'm sure your money is as good as ours!

2) I'm satisfied with the way the finish is. I'll try the suggested method when I do the dash but that won't be for a few weeks yet.

My money is still green and ugly.

I live in the Great Environmental Empire of California and the Powers That Be do not like certain things coming into the fine state where every one is beautiful. So that's why I asked.

I have a lifetimes worth of correct suede paint but don't ask how I got it here.

Now I see your point! But things that cross the border are usually inspected at that point and the inspectors are more concerned about the more illegal contraband - drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, etc., than they are with various state laws.

Anyway, its a moot point if you already have lots.

I need some b-7 blue and I looked on ebay and all I see is some old school basket ball players pictures. I could not find the paint. I emailed and nothing from him yet.

FWIW

I am 99% sure that is this color. I have sprayed plenty of this paint and can still get it mixed. I called about another lacquer color recently and was told they can still mix it. It's a nice deal to be able to get it in spray bombs, nothing wrong with that. This is my personal stash.

But I like DIA 9388 better, it has less texture, almost no texture. more like a suede finish and is correct for a black 71 challenger dash and steering column.

Unless I'm mistaken, that finish was referred to a "suede" on all models as well as the FSM. The additive is even called "suede additive". But "textured" is a much more common term.

Anyone trying to find this guy on ebay ... you have to use the advanced search function and search by username "old-school-auto" but I just checked and he doesn't have the paints listed there so an email is probably the best bet.

It's not easy to ship spray bombs in Canada. Not allowed through most carriers...UPS,Canada Post,Canpar etc.Big fines if caught.Best bet is to pick them up at shows. The way the MOE is going I would not be suprised to see spray bombs banned just like solvent based paints.I'm in booney land and they are hasseling me about my paint booth. All body shops must now have a sound barrier built around the booths exhaust chimney.I have no residential neighbours,on 2.5 acres of land and you cannot hear the exhaust fan 100 feet away but they (Ministry of the Enviroment) are extremely pushy...non compliance can be a 100K fine.

Good point about the shipping. You wouldn't want them in a plane's cargo hold I guess !!
