My '93 Dakota has its stock step bumper in place. And I know it wasn't meant to pull a lot, but, what can it handle?

Wondering if it could handle pulling another Dakota on a tow dolly?

Anyone?

I'm looking for a parts Dak and am trying to figure out how to get it home before I find it. Wouldn't be cross country, at most 20 miles.

Thanks.

Don't use my advice but I towed a 69 383 Barracuda fastback on the back of my 68 Dart GT convertible using a tow dolly... whistling

I think the truck can pull up to 5000 pounds, but I am betting the bumper is only rated at 2500 pounds.

The bumper rating is usually stamped in the step area by the ball.

I pulled a 6000lbs enclosed trailer full of my tools and personal belongings on the bumper of my 91 Dakota from Nashville to here and the bumper was saggin pretty low when I got here. I think there was a stamp that said 500lbs max trailer weight on the bumper.

I knew it was there, just curious about real world experience pullin' with the stock bumper.

Mine says 200lbs tongue weight and 2000 pull weight.

Looks like I'd be better off putting my AAA to use.

Thanks guys.

That's why you pay for it , or use it as an excuse to put a class 3 hitch on the back ?

Up here in the rust belt, I wouldn't trust the Dakota factory step bumper to haul around my 11hp MTD riding mower. Most of them I've seen are either rusted out or bowed down in the center.

I have seen many Dakotas with class 3 or class 4 hitches hauling around a lot of stuff without issues, the trucks are capable.

I hauled a 62 4 door Chrysler New Yorker on a heavy open trailer with my 94 V6 4x4 (Magnum 3.9, auto, with about 150K miles) Dakota that has a class 4 hitch. That was the upper limit of my truck, it could get to 50 mph on the flat ground, but slowed down going up hills! Good thing the trailer had brakes. Gene

A 2" receiver hitch is not too expensive and a nice addition... could probably score one at a JY...

Hmmmm....dang. The last time I went to the JY, a trailer hitch was the furthest thing from my mind. I'm sure at least one of these had a hitch.....
