i have to get the road runner up in the air to do some transmission work. what is the farthest point forward that i can put jack stands? i usually have them on the frame rails to he rear of the front wheels, but they really get in the way.

I put them on the rear axle and on the frame in front by the core support.

you might see if you can good a good point of contact at the front kmember bolts for (2) stands there and can put another (5th) stand under the center of the kmember with it up just touching the K as a backup

Put them under the lower control arms, that'll raise the body higher and keep the LCA more out of the way. If that is still in the way, then the forwardmost Kmember mounting bolt.

I place the front ones under the lower control arms and the rear under the axle housing. Also I use 6 ton jack stands as they can be adjusted higher, plus they have a larger foot print to make them more stable.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

It's possible with stands ahead of the front axles that the door latches may bind and not latch well.

Sometimes, I have used metal drive-on ramps, backward (with the ramp end forward). I use a floor jack to lift beneath the K-Member and place the ramps in position under each tire (as I said) long end forward (toward the front bumper) to be out of the way.

Ding ding ding I do believe we have a winna. that would give the most room ever & be the safest

yes, i've thought of that and may get some. only minor problem is the angle part of the ramp still gets in the way a bit with moving in and out from underneath the car. still the best solution though...

no, i wish. i'll start another thread on this later when i tear into it, but i've had an issue for years now. sounds like a throwout bearing going bad. take it apart, no physical evidence of what is going on. put it back together, problem gone for 6 months, 9 months, a year... this is the 3rd time it's come about. this time i decided i was going to drive it until it breaks.

well... it broke. we'll see, but i'm 99.9% sure whatever broke is in the bell housing. hopefully this weekend i'm going to get the transmission out, and see what is going on.

wish me luck!

Whatever you do, be sure to have some kind of secondary safety device. When you think about it...at work, OSHA has demanded we have secondary, sometimes even triple safety devices in place to prevent injury. Yet at home, we often ignore these measures "since they're just annoying overly protective measures by an agency trying to justify their existence"

but sometimes, it just makes sense. cinder blocks under the frame rails, or ramps/blocks under the tires, etc. in case you kick out a stand, or knock the stand with the transmission while trying to slide it out from under the car, etc.

Remember the post I made last May. Lost my 51 year old uncle when his truck fell on him. truck was on jack stands for weeks too, so he had to have kicked something, pulled the truck sideways, etc. while laying under the truck.

I usually stack the tires under the frame rails as a secondary safety catch.

That's what we do and it works great. We still have to jack the front up to get the transmission out from underneath the car because the ramps don't get it high enough to clear the bell housing but it's very stable and gives you lots of room.

Found a used QuikLift on Craigslist when I did my 518 install, best money I ever spent.

I flattened one of those metal ramps with my 64 300, after I had already parked on it and got out. Since then, no thank you, I use the plastic ones when I use a ramp.

I prefer the ones with bracing otherwise I'd weld some on.

After reading this thread I'm wondering if a person cut the tapered area off of the ramp & welded a vertical plate there. big hyd floor jack to get it up into the depressions since you ain't got no ramp. (4) of em & you'd have your height & safety and no peripheral anything to block your movement. I'd start with some heavy duty ramps
