Dial it back two or three degrees and see what happens. It is possible to have TDC mark off a bit, has happened to me.

iagree less timing usually means more heat. Think you have to look somewhere other than timing to fix your over heat ills.

There`s an optimal timing range for max power and burn.....go too far above that and detonation occurs, too far below and the motor`s unhappy and runs hotter. Just my experiences...........

Not horrible for driving and I`ve been 210 for miles on the Vegas fwy but would NEVER race it that hot....

Production cars run a 195 stat... yes its for
emissions but it still doesnt hurt anything....
but you have to have the octane if you want to run
the timing up there(my SB made max power at 40* with
93 octane... I run it at 36-37 so I can run on 87 octane)
but I still havent started fine tuning... I am running
injection now and I have to get it up to 160+ for it to
learn and so far I havent been there yet with my other
problems.... I wouldnt even blink at 200*... look at what
the temps are on the NASCAR guys.. they see 240*

I can loose 7-8 degrees by idling down my SB from 1300 to 970 or so. The less times it fires the less heat you make.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Is it hot at idle and slow traffic? Or is it hot running steady down the highway? Or both?

205-210 F would not bother me at all sitting in traffic. On a roll, which is when I may want/need full power and where I tune, I like to see it stay just over stat temp. With the 180 stat which I run, a bit over 180 on a roll is what I look for... and temps "reasonable" in stop and go type driving. In stop and go, 210 is fine, 220 OK and 230 starting to get concerned.
