pull the back seat out then you should have room to pull the inside door panel

Or, there are hidden screws or arm rests, handles that need to come off first. If you can get at least part of the panel loose, maybe you can see inside and/or reach a hand inside to manipulate and release the mechanism.
It could be that the mechanism or rods and clips have come apart not allowing the inner and outer handles to actuate/release.
On the '74 W200 Power Wagon I bought last November, I had to lift up on the driver door itself, as well as the release button, to get it to release, it was that way when I bought it.
Turned out all I needed to do to "Fix" it, was to use a Hex (Allen) Wrench through the adjuster hole opening in the sheet metal of the inner door, just beneath the mechanism. Adjustment was all that was required.
Yours could be a similar issue, or the rod retention clips may have popped off or failed, or the mechanism itself is seized or broken.
