Just bought a 1983 Cordoba, 318, with lean burn. Car has intermittent starting issues, appears to be electrical. I would like to replace the lean burn with a regular distributor and ECU. There is no ballast resistor on this one. Any tips on converting it? Thanks in advance, Bob

Really, no ballast? Its been a long time, but that surprises me.

I think I would add a ballast to the wire feeding the coil +, just before the coil, then add the electronic conversion as normal. Gene

get a parts house 4 pin ECU & you need no less than 1.5 ohms (coil/ballast combined) with your coil and ballast choices. And a vac adv dist & it'd be a good time to mod it; reduce lower shaft end play to .005" toss the heavy spring with the elongated loop on one end. mr gasket and MP have light springs. The wiring diagram is in the archives but do not connect the yellow starter relay "ign" wire to the ballast as they show. If there is no ported vac source on that carb then plug in the can to manifold/set initial to ~18 then shorten the slots to get 35 (set/checked with can capped) then plug the can back in. if you have ported exact same thing (procedure) ex the 18 will be the initial with no contribution from the can at idle

The ballast resistor with computer was a lean burn thing. 81 and newer is electronic spark control or fuel control which is like the next generation. At least you're in Canada so you don't have a feedback carberator to deal with but you might still end up having to change the carb.

It's pretty straight forward to change. With a stock distributor I've always had base timing set around 14.

If you follow the wiring diagram RapidRobert mentioned you do nee to hook up the yellow shown at the ballast resistor only it might not be a yellow wire on your car. You need to use a check light or volt meter and figure out what wire it really is. I think it goes to the spot on the starter relay that says something like BAL or BALLAST. I've always used the 3rd wiring diagram on that page.

I used the article from Mopar Action (trash that lean burn, on their web site), and it worked well. I do believe the lean burn carb is basically a small venturi unit (like a slant six), and very lean. I just put on a stock carb, woke it up.
