I ordered an auxiliary trans cooler, but found out it's on back order
http://www.xtremediesel.com/BD-Power-1300601-Xtruded-Auxiliary-Trans-Cooler.aspx

Plan "B"

remembered I had a cooler from a cummins
has the correct size fittings as the trans
normal life it resides under the exhaust manifold and turbo
also behind the oil cooler, doesn't get any fresh air

trans lines- cut 2 holes and run the line inside the inner fender/ build a rock guard
then into bulkhead connectors, along the frame/above the t-bar then in front of the trans cross member, turn up/forward into the trans case

cooling line- normal line going from water pump housing to the factory in car heater
out of heater and into back of trans cooler
out of trans cooler into upper radiator tank

Makes a circle/loop, trying to make a clean install

no room to mount it on the driver's side, plus the water line would have to cross over the engine

Do you think it will work???
or wait for the other cooler

thanks

You are tapping into the cooling system on the hot side with the heater connection. That hot water won't be effective cooling and may actually warm the fluid up.

I don't know how or where you would find a pressurized source of cool water pumped from the radiator bottom tank... you could somehow tap into the cool water feed from the pump into the block. Wouldn't be pretty and may throw the engine cooling system out of balance.

I think I'd wait for the other cooler (hopefully a good size unit to go in front of the radiator).

That's a lot of work, money and cooling.
Why do you think it's needed?

I used the factory cooler from the van I pulled the 518.

95 Dodge 3600, go to RockAuto, $50.

from a post back in feb

since the topic is

info about the overdrive unit 518,618 >> ect.

Does anyone know if the valve bodys are the same (shift valves/ springs)
Non lock up 518> (gas engine) and
Non lock up 618 (Diesel)

plan is use a JW bell on the 618
change the governor to shift at 4500

I mated a 618 to a JW bell
to get the most clutches, 4 pinion planetary ETC.

doing that the case has the larger fittings (1/2")
a (gas) factory radiator has the smaller 3/8" fittings

want the trans to run as cool as possible...

right now I can barely run 170* on the engine>540> E-85

If I want to round robbin/ run it hard, I can.

bucket list> Drag week, and one mile run.

thanks for the reply
I'm not disputing what you say
I'm trying to learn, this is why I'm asking

can I put the radiator fitting in the bottom tank
draw from it into the trans cooler
out the back of the trans cooler go to the heater core
from there go to the pipe fitting at the pump

Isn't it low pressure? would draw water thru?

Only reason to run thru the heater core is to make the trans cooler, a clean look
Don't drive it in the winter/ don't need cabin heat

Yes, it would heat the inlet water, but I also block the bypass hole in the housing (have for years, no thermostat, just a restriction ring
as I said in the other post, I can barely get to 170*
partly cause, I'm not sucking hot water thru the bypass hole, and running E-85.

once I get it running, while waiting on the other cooler

I may set a bucket of water on the floor and see if the pump can draw water from the pipe fitting ( for fun and to learn) LOL

That will work fine. That's how it is plumbed on trucks with a diesel. All modern cars and trucks have multiple coolers (trans, p/s, engine oil, etc) that runs the engine coolant thru them to bring all the fluids to the same temp (the eng temp). Also to bring all the fluids up to temp faster. If you use the heater exit line that is not the "hot" side it is the cool side. The water pump does not pull fluid it pushes coolant thru the motor. It will not disrupt the cooling system, you'll just add some capacity.

that's what I based the idea on>>> Was looking at how it was
set up on the cummins engine, I have here.

understand the pump pushes...

the area with the pipe fitting, is located BEHIND the impeller, (same as the inlet hose)
Wouldn't it be lower pressure? than at the outlet> upper hose

thanks
