I'm still learning about camshafts and noticed 2 camshafts that have very similar specs, but different lifts, what performance gain is had by a larger lift if the duration is almost identical? Both cams are hydraulic for a small block.

1st cam specs:

Duration Intake/Exhaust at 050: 250/256
Valve Lift Intake/Exhaust: .519/.524

2nd cam specs.

Duration Intake/Exhaust at 050: 251/257
Valve Lift Intake/Exhaust: .564/.564

Open the valves more, further or longer, and you get more power scope workPut the bigger lift one in it up twocents

I second that.

Lift is the way to go, unless one cam has a lot wider LSA than the other. Then I would opt for the cam with the narrow LSA, or lobe separation angle. The cam card will give the spec. If one was cut at 110, and the other 108 or less, the lesser of the two will probably go faster, depending on how good the heads are. Really poor, or stock type heads and pump gas compression will appreciate the extra overlap and early intake closing of a narrow lsa. If you really want to get into it, another thing to look at is duration at higher lobe lifts. More aggressive cams will have higher duration numbers at .200 lobe lift, which help breathing as well. What compression, cubes and heads are you running? Port work?

Both cam's are 110 lobe. Heads are OOTB eldebrock, with 10:1 compression and a 360 .030 over making 365 cubes. I currently have the .519/.524 cam and it works well, but looking to build a new motor that's a little faster.

I did find an ISKY cam with

Duration Intake/Exhaust at 050: 256/256
Valve Lift Intake/Exhaust: .525/.525
Lobe 108

How would going from 110 to 108 lobe separation with basically the same lift affect performance?

If you have not bought a cam yet........DON'T.

Get on the phone and order a CUSTOM cam for your combo. I can tell you I pay the SAME for off the shelf and custom cams. You may have to wait for 10 days but so what? Call anyone with a phone (emails blow because it's impossible to have a conversation) and TALK to them, question why they do what they do. For example, the de facto rule now is install the cam 4* ahead of LSA (some as many as 5-6*... a Crane I have goes in 5* "advanced" and some older Ultra-Dyne stuff I have goes in 6* "advanced". Just recieved a new custom cam, it's ground on a 105 LSA and INSTALLS on a 105 LSA. I will call later today and ask why, but I'm pretty confindent I already know the answer.

There are many companies I know of who would RATHER you call them and let them pick the cam. Cam Motion being one of them. Racer Brown another. Bullet would rather you call them. So would Mike Jones of Jones cams. Sig Erson is working on new grinds. Pick up the phone. You may even learn something.

Just because you think it won't make it true. Horsepower is KING. To dispute this is stupid. C. Alston

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!!!! Im still a novice when it comes to cams but I would NEVER buy a shelf cam again. I have a Ultradyne solid roller, not big, for my 360. .556/.556 .285/.295 and .249/.259 @ 50 and so far, I love it.

At first It sounded like you had the two cams,,,,,, I agree with the best choice being call a cam company and get a CUSTOM grind, and a company that LIKES to custom grind for customers.
