Well I climberd under my Dart today in an attempt to get my Fuel Gauge working again.Ive already ruled out the gauge actually works ,it swings over to the Full side when the wire is grounded and the key in the "on" position.I never let it "peg" as I was warned not to do that.
I proceed to remove the sender from the tank, replaced the float(I suspect the original is faulty, though I hear no liquid inside when I shake it.)I replaced the sock while I was there, but kept all the old parts as they appear to be in decent condition.
I also replaced the sending unit gasket.Got everything buttoned back up.I hook up the fuel line, the ground strap I had brazed back together and then hook up the sending unit wire.Climb out from underneath, Turn the key to the "ON" position and the fuel gauge doesnt do a Darn thing,no movement whatsoever.
So Now what? Any Suggestions?
I find it wierd that my temp gauge is acting "somewhat" the same.
After driving I can shut the engine off, turn the key to the "On" Position and watch the temp climb, fire the car up and start driving and it drops again to 120* and stays there. Could this be an indicator of something amiss in the back of the instrument cluster?

The voltage regulator on the back of the gauge panel may be corroded or amy be shorting out

When you had the sender out of the tank did you hook it up to a ground, turn on the key, and manually move the float. If the sender is good the gauge should have registered with the movement of the float when you moved it.
Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks.
But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

you'll also want to make sure you actually have a connection (continuity) between the plug on the back of the gauge cluster and the sending unit plug. It could have a bad or no connection, in which case your fuel gauge would never work.

Nope, the temp gauge is working too. Pull the fuel sending unit and test it with an ohm meter, no fuel in the float and the ground test saying the gauge works leads me to think the sending unit itself is shot.

HOLD ON!!!
Let me ask a REALLY dumb Question. Enclosed I have a pic of a sending unit from Autozone from thier online catalog. It shows a wire(you see it?)
I got to looking at the sending unit I pulled out and reinstalled and there was no wire, and I remember thinking to myself "how does this thing register?" I also saw 2 places with male electrical spades thinking that maybe an "optional" wire went to these.
Guess what im asking is...My sending unit doesnt have the wire like what is pictured,is this normal,or do I need to install that wire?
Yes the wire needs to be there.

Back to my question: did you verify that the sender works by moving the float with the sender out and grounded watching the gauge while moving the float with the key on
Didnt try that yet, will put the car on stands again tomorrow, pull the sender and give it a whirl.

That wire goes from the windings of the sending unit to the post. Without it theres no way it could possibly work.

Guess not having done many of these that missing wire is something I overlooked. Wouldnt that be just peachy if the only reason the gauge/sender doesnt work is because a missing wire? If thats the case, kinda makes you wonder just how that wire ended up going away? Now im all fired up,im gonna tear into it tommorrow ,ill report back with my findings(without starting another post as suggested above) Thanks for all your time and knowledge up to this point everybody.

you need a new sending unit. that wire is swedged on with a rivet like thingy. if its missing, most likely you wont get a wire back on. sending units die. its a fact of life. go get a new one and be done with it. just accept that the new one will only read 7/8 full when full though
That can be cured but carefully adjusting the float by slight bends
i bet youre right. i just havent tried it yet. i bet mine it topping out before it should.

The one I got from Advance Auto for $69 is dead nuts correct.Maybe not the case for all of them but the price was right. I did have to use my original lock ring though cause the new one didnt fit tight.

I dunno how other members feel but when you get the new fuel sending unit in there (as yours seems to be missing a wire) I'd remove the sock from the feed tube and put an external fuel filter. It's a PITA to get inadequate fuel delivery and having to drop the tank every time. Let the dirt roll through and catch it externally. I have 1 filter on the subframe and another just before the carb.

I was gonna make a comment about that too, the original post said he shook the tank and didn't hear anything and i thought to myself geez that would be my luck, spend hour's of troublshooting and find out the tank's empty

spwc I was wondering why I didn't hear any cussing about having to drain the tank, then when you said it's got 6 gallons in it, enough to give a reading but not enough to spill out.

I dont like those straps anyways, cheaply made these days. You install it on the tube and if you happen to be like this gentleman here removing it and checking things, the tongs snap and its junk. Why not just get a 18" length of solid copper wire, 14 gauge, attach a small hose clamp to it on the tube of the unit and solder an eyelot terminal on the other side of the cable up by where the shock mount is and screw it into the subframe. Thats how my 69 is hooked up.

When you take it back out you may find that it has a strap making the con. between the reostat and the terminal on the flange instead of a wire. I just went to the shop and looked at one I took out of a 69 B Body.

I have fixed bad sending units on my 64 Polara and 65 Dart. The Polara's unit had a small sweep arm that rides across the rheostat broken off and I soldered it back on 3 years ago...it's been fine ever since. The Dart's was a little different and I had to drill a tiny hole through the strap mount, then used a shortened finish nail to reattach it. I was planning on just replacing them, but since I was able to repair them I saw no need. They may fail again some day, but for now that's $100 I could spend on other parts. Lucky for me, the Polara's unit sits high in the tank and if there's only a half tank of gas you can remove the unit without draining the tank!

do you have an original sending unit or an aftermarket unit ? original factory units do not have a wire , they use flat metal as a wire inside ... if i remember correctly ...
then there is this ...
Quote:
The strap is present. Its a longer one than the one Yearone sells. I cleaned both the outlet of the fuel sender and the inlet of the fuel line where the strap makes contact in order to provide a better ground .
did you check to make sure that your fuel line as actually making good contact to ground ? if it's not the fuel guage will not work , it would be the same as if you didn't have the strap
