I have a 1970 Cuda with a 383 and it will not start. If I jump across the battery connection and the ignition connection on the relay it will crank.

I put a test light on the yellow wire and turn the key and the light comes on. I put a test light on the neutral safety switch and shift through the gears and the light comes on in park and neutral.

I have replaced the neutral safety switch, the safety switch harness; I put a new starter relay in; I am now lost. Any ideas please I have been playing with this thing for 2 weeks.

Thanks,
Jeff

Are you sure the starter relay (the new one) is good? I had a brand new one that was bad.

also, check to make sure you ignition switch is working, set up a remote start, to see if you can eliminate that switch as a source of your non-crank issue.

I put a test light on the yellow ignition wire and the relay. When I turned the key the test light came on so I am assuming that the ignition is not the issue. Am I wrong in this assumption. I did order a new relay, but it will not be in until tomorrow.

run a wire opposite of the yellow wire terminal to your negative side battery. Most likely bad ground. Runs through safety neutral as you know. Happens a million times over and you will see guys ground that terminal to its own mounting bolts . Cant tell you how many cars Ive bought with that going on. If its cranking when you jump starter terminal with battery terminal from outside, and you have power at the yellow ignition, you have either a bad ground on neutral safety side or you have a bad ignition switch. That's what I would bet on

O.k. It appears to have been a bad really (keeping my fingers crossed). Here is the next question, the brown wire that comes from the starter to the relay what type of connector is used on the relay end and what gauge is the correct gauge for that application? Does some one have a picture of the relay wired head on?
