Looking for a 2nd vehicle and want a Dakota crew or Durango. Local craigslist has an abundance of both w/ bad 4.7s for cheap. Will a 5.2 or 5.9 bolt in (trans and motor mounts)in place of a 4.7? work

Physically, yes. those trucks had 4.7s and 5.9s available in the same model year.

electronically, no. not unless you replace the PCM and wire harness and transmission.

Guess I'll keep looking for one with a 5.2/5.9 and pass on the ones with bad 4.7s.
Thanks, Tom. up

I hear rumors that a 4.7 computer will run a 5.7 Hemi and you can keep the trans for the 4.7 (never seem to see them go bad). I am sure it would take some effort wiring it all in but it would certainly be real fun.

If I find a real good deal on a nice 2wd short box regular cab with a blown 4.7 for cheap I am going to try doing exactly that. Unfortunatly most everything around here is 4x4 and they are not the best go fast rigs out there.

I think there are some kits out there with motor mounts n stuff to do this swap too. Don't know where to shop for them though. There's a handful of 5.7 Dakotas out there though, so it's been done and isn't too difficult

The 4.7 and Hemi use the 545RFE and the 5.2 and 5.9 use the 46RE. Completely different transmissions and electronics running them

But the bell pattern is the same correct ? It's not possible to run the LA in front of the 545RFE ???

Curious because I'll be looking at an 03 1500 ram with a 4.7 and may want to swap it out when the motor takes a dump , but it's only got 60 or 70k so I hope it's later than sooner.

Yes. The small blocks of the LA family, the 5.2/5.9, the 4.7 and 5.7 all use the same bell pattern

The 03 ram should be running the NGC computer for the engine and transmission. 02 and back are JTEC computers. Quick way to tell is the JTEC has three plugs and a separate computer for the transmission. NGC has 4 plugs and runs the engine and trans with the same computer. So I don't think you will be able to run a LA motor and use the 4.7 transmission. The 4 plug computer runs a 32 tooth crankshaft ring while the JTEC runs a 16 tooth crankshaft tone ring. Little something to think about if you do end up getting a truck that needs a motor. I had to do all this research when I got my 02 quad cab Dak. Honestly I would run the 4.7 till it quits and either do a hemi swap or get a rebuilt 4.7 and maintain it and it will last.

So if you had a Dakota/Durango w/ a bad 4.7 and say a wrecked Dakota/Durango w/ a 5.9, you could simply swap engine/trans/harness,& PCM between the 2?

yup. if you have a 4.7 truck and a 5.9 truck, you have all the parts needed for the swap.

depending on how bad the wreck is though, it may be easier to swap the body parts from the 4.7 truck to the 5.9 truck

Thanks , I just got a line on an '03 1500 with a 4.7 , it's only got 60k on it , trade to chevy dealer and a local used car lot is supposed to have it in a day or to. I'm looking for a good 99-01 , but I may buy this one for now while I search for something else.

I was thinking of doing a 5.7 hemi swap if this motor took a dump ... not that I have time for another project ...

Dakota and durango even the same year do have some differences in the engine compartmnet harness, don't know why they did it but it is certainly differnt mainly where the harness under the front bumper connects to the engine harness. You can get the wiring diagrams for both and splice them together and make everything work with a little skill and patience. I just went through this on my R/T dakota, the factory engine harness had been trashed and I had a 99 Durango and the harness took a lot of work to figure out how to make it all right. All 5 of my durangos had a different plug there than either of my dakotas.
