64 Dart 273/904. I am swapping in a 360/727. Is the trans crossmember the same for both transmissions?

Thanks,

Josh

Yep. You will have to clearance the tunnel a little to get the 727 in though.

You'll also have to notch the passenger side of the crossmember for the exhaust to clear. This is the TTI modified crossmember.

there's a broad range of tolerances there, a few 727's will clear w no banging, most will clear with flattening or removing the pinchweld, a few need the tunnel hammered for clearance in addition to the pinchweld removed. BEST is to mock one up in your particular vehicle & see what you have, a person sure doesn't need to be hammering if they dont have to. Trim the crossmember on the one side w a whizzer to get it exact then remove it & weld some flat pieces across the gap you have created. 727 bolts in the same.

I thought I was going crazy. Put the trans in the other day (or I was trying to) and I couldn't get it all the way up with a poly bushing installed. This is the first ealy A body I have every played with and the seems to be little issues around every corner it seems.

Thanks,

Josh

After disappointing results on my 273, I am seriously considering the 360 swap into my 1965 early A. I want to keep my cable operated 904 however. What oil pan did you have to use for your installation? Any other major problems?

center sump pass car 360 pan fits perfect. The aftermarket flex plate(I forget the #) takes care of the 360 to neutral balanced 904 issue. Add an ear to one of your 273 mts. I've use a 273 water pump on the 360 timing cover to keep my orig rad.

Josh when you are done you'll be glad because they are sooo lightweight. Post your Q's. If you are going SB use a 904 especially since in your case you do not have enough tunnel clearance without modifying it & a 904 will hold up fine(just ask TBF )

I am actually building the car for a friend.

360 magnum, 11-1 comp. Eddy heads , big comp cam and I want to use the 727 because its already built ( my old one out of the challenger)

I am using a standard 360 car oil pan and it looks to clear fine with Schumacher poly engine mounts. The TTI headers make everything a huge pain in the butt to work on. I figured I could put the trans in with the headers on...Nope and then come to find out a 727 doesn't clear now

Does anyone have pics of the clearancing they have done to make these fit?

Josh

I put together a 65 dodge dart 2 door sedan.i myself wanted an a body but wanted something different.i put together 360 and 904. i could not imagine trying to put a 727 in the car as tight as a 904 is in there.i got the tti headers and the special starter and the starter did not fit.I used a regular mini starter on it.It is a close fit when it comes to some of the header tubes and i wish i had put fittings in the side of the block instead of using the 90 degree oil filter adapter and used a oil filter relocation kit.dartman366 did the fittings in the side of his block for a oil filter relocation kit. I did modifiey my cross member myself for the tti headers.Brad

Something I forgot to mention is that if you use Schumacker polygraphite motor mounts you will raise the engine close to 1/8th of an inch. The poly bisquets do not settle or squish like the rubber. This will affect the headers collectors in that the bottoms of the collectors will be in line with the crossmember.
