How's your HHR fan working out for you? #1854917

I have a 22" cross flow rad with a heavy duty Hayden cluth fan set up and a stock shroud that cools just fine for me except when sitting in heavy traffic for awhile such as the cruises like woodward. I would like to hear opinions on this setup for this situation. I think it would work but some have told me all electric fans don't work so well. I currently have a 22" northern cross flow rad,shroud with plenty of gaps,15" hayden fan and H.D. clutch with March underdrive crank pully so not ideal.
option B is a champion rad,new shroud and bigger fan but more work/money.

I've got one on a 22" champion 2 row in my '65, and it cools a mildly built 360/727 just fine. Perfect fit to the radiator. Only issue I have is that it seems to rob quite a bit of juice when it's on, idle speed drops as though it's pulling power from the ignition.


In order to know what you want, you'll probably have to find out what you don't want.

The cheapest thing would be to lose the underdrive pulley. More fan speed and more WP speed. A stock pulley and belt or two may fix the problem.

As far as electric fans, the cheap parts store/Summit type do not move near enough air to cool by themselves.

The OE fans like the HHR move a lot more air and also take a lot more power. They can get the job done and need more amps to do it. If you are running any version of round back or squareback alternator - even the 100 amp units - they do not have enough idle output to handle a good size fan plus other stuff. Upgrade to a 120 amp Denso, 140 amp GM derived alternator or something similar would be minimum with a big fan drawing 20-30+ amps.

yes I did the denso 130 amp alt swap awhile a go and love it. running hella h4's and a 2 amp stereo though. hard to tell how many amps it will handle at idle but seems to have plenty to spare. read the hhr fan draws around 30 amps on startup,I think I got that covered.

Correction: "idle speed drops because fan is pulling power from the alternator."

There is no free lunch. Replacing a mechanical fan with an electric fan moves the power transfer from the belt drive to the power cord. It could be argued that the mechanical fan is more efficient because there is a power loss converting kinetic energy into electrical energy, then converting the electrical energy back into mechanical energy. Roughly 10% of the power used by the fan is wasted, assuming 95% efficiency for both alternator and motor.

Electric fans win because they can be turned off when not needed. So total energy consumed is less. Also with most engines in new cars going east-west, mechanical fans aren't that easy to use.
