I am looking in to aftermarket tachs for my Duster. I like the idea of having a larger (3-3/4"?) mounted on my console up by the dash pointing up towards me but I am not against a smaller one mounted on the steering coloumn. I have never actually set one of these up before, seems straight forward enough. I would prefer to get an American made piece, I believe Stewart Warner is American made but... I don't know much about them and could be mistaken.

Any advice on shopping around for one, any particular style to stay away from or anything to be on the look out for, is one less acurate than another or known to be problematic?

I have always had good luck with American made Autometer products.

As far as size goes...sort of depends on you. Maybe mock up something and put it in a few locations to see where is the best for you ?

If youre drag racing I suggest you maount it on the column or Dash, this way you wont have to take your eyes off the track to look at your tachometer.

If youre just puttering around or cruising, then under the dash, near the ashtray might not be a bad place,as youll only be using it for reference at times anyway.

I am not going to be racing it too much, at least not at first. Mostly going to be on the street. I put the engine together with the original cast crank so around 5 grand I am going to start to panic.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah the cast crank is more than adequate for well over 5,000rpm

IMO, there is no other choice than Autometer, or their economy brand-AutoGage. I actually have a used 5" AutoGage tack mounted on my a-pillar in my truck, just above my dash. It was free, so I figured why not. Hook up was very easy, and Autometer's website even offered instructions for hook up and setup. Eventually, I would like to make a custom dash panel with all Autometer gauges.

I run the Autometer white face 8K tachs in every car or truck I build.

Hookup is easy. Orange wires are lighting. Sometimes you can find an unused pigtail to hook right into- no splicing.

I want my fair share

What do you guys think of the Auto gage Monster Shift-Lite Tachometers?

I think I can get one used locally...

I simply went for the modest one of all, and fit down the ashtray area under the dash frame. Closer look to originals. I didn't want some fancy, and more in fact disimulated

EVEN USED ONE OF THOSE BLUE LIGHT RUBBER BULB LENSES what I had extra to get same color than rest of cluster lights, instead the ones provided.

I usually use Auto-Meter or Auto-Gauge.

Those aren't actually Monster tachs, but if that is what you want to use, that is your choice. Personally, I prefer the white face gauges, but the one I have is a black face. Like I said before, it was free. This is what I have: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku

Really, you can't go wrong with any Autometer or AutoGage gauge. Just pick the one you like best and run with it.

AHH, my mistake in the description. You are right, they are not the monster tach.

Thanks again for the advice!

I run a 2 7/8" tach on the steering column, on the nub where the column shifter used to be. It's decent, not too big, not too small. But I'm scrapping it and going to an in-dash 3 3/4" autometer instead.
