I want to replace my rear bearings for green bearings because I'm going to convert to disc brakes. I have a hydraulic press so that makes it easier.

Has anyone done this before? If so, could you share pictures or a video?

FSM procedure is to cut the races off the current bearings, work the retaining collar over with a chisel to relieve the press fit then pound or press it off. No heat wrench! Then press the new on. Slight warming of the new is supposed to help (eg 200 degree oven).

I have a (simple) press... and have gladly paid a machine shop that has done this before $50 or $75.

Also, if you want, you can keep the taper bearings with discs. Dr. Diff's kits work with either type bearing.

I just did this on the Demon. I used a cut off wheel on my grinder to cut the retainer and bearing off. Have to be extremely careful when you get close to the shaft so you don't knick it. New ones just press right on. I didn't need any heat at all.

I did look at a video of some guy who did a bearing replacement on a 9 inch on youtube. Took me about 2 hours to do it from start to finish.

You can run disc brakes with the existing tapered bearings. We ran a DoctorDiff kit on the back of Tim's Valiant. Since it was a road race car we wanted to keep the tapered axle bearings. It all worked together just fine.

I'm going to convert to dr.diff's 11.7 disc brake kit and already have his green bearing in stock. I will probably have to cut the retainer and bearing with precaution. I thought I could press the retainer and then the bearing, but since no one has done this that way, cutting it will be the best way to do it...
