Aren't all yokes supposed to use the same bolts?

I bought a universal strap kit for the 8 1/4 rear end and the damn bolts don't fit. They run in 1/8 inch and lock up, the threads come out starting to be smashed.

Does anyone know the actual bolt dimension that is supposed to be used?

Factory used 1/4 fine threads, maybe your kit has 1/4-20"Coarse) instead.

What Buildanother said, the wrong pitch (coarse vs fine)

I think they were heavily corroded. I kept getting lots of rust out. Finally, I oiled them up, cut them to 1/4 x 20 and made sure to use thread lock. 20 ft lbs of torque is not much, so I think it was OK to cut them.

I could not find the 1/4 x 28 tap at any store.

Hopefully the bolts stay put, changing thread pitch by retapping a hole that was already tapped isn't something that is recommended.

I would have tried harder for that fine thread tap but the straps do not do much. All of the engine's torque is contained by the yoke. The straps do nothing more than keep the drivershaft from sliding forward into the spline and falling out of the yoke.
