If you want the 88% correct textured finish you must use DDL9355 Lacquer. 88% correct because the texture additive changed slightly from the orig. If you want the catalyzed, semi-gloss, smooth sheen finish enamel it's DCC9355...

Organisol Black Revised 01-2009

You must lay the paint down wet or the texture will stand up instead of lay down and you will have an extremely rough finish that attracts everything.

Use the slowest thinner you can find and add some retarder as well if it is above 80 degrees. If possible use over black primer.

Allow surfaces to dry for several weeks before painting cover coats. This is important.

Put 2 light cover coats of semi gloss black over grey primer, allow to dry at least 24 hrs or more before organisoling

Use a gun with a big tip 1.4mm or larger

Cross coat the large area surfaces in 3 directions –eliminates streaking of texture diag first, short length, long length with overlapping passes. It must go on wet.

Test spray before committing to car. Practice a little. Use SLOW thinner !!!! Lay on WET!
Do not lay on dry, paint horizontal.

Patience!!!!! Thin per instructions min 150%

After getting full coverage of texture typically 4 coats thin each progressive coat 25% Use your judgment Think about 6 coats.

Allow each coat to dry for at least 30 min.
Allow each coat to dry for at least 30 min.

Texture must cover surface completely-there should be no gaps in the texture. The purpose of laying it on cross coating & wet is to get the texture to lay down. I am no expert, but I do paint and I have done my fair share of wresting with this paint.

Edge it in with a touch up gun,

Use fine line tape on all paint edge breaks

Do the bottom side of the hood first-part of your practice

Paint All other surfaces at the same time as the top side of the hood.

Make sure grille is out of the car

Across the tops of the fender & across the front header panel be sure to add 1 extra coat of Organisol to resist the long term wear of the paint from stones etc..

The original tech article was written by me for the SIAC All American Racer magazine in about 1985. It has been revised a few times now as the knowledge base grows. Were you even born yet in 1985 there Mr quik 77???

I don't see where any one is called an expert...
I could keep the what has been learned to myself, but instead I share it so people can paint expensive paint properly. If you have nothing positive to contribute please go away.

I have a quart can of the original texture additive, which I bought back in the 70's for just such an occurence. It is a powder, as I recall.

Unfortunately, a very nice and knowledgeable PPG tech, named Heather, tells me that there is another important ingredient that is no longer available, plus the original toners are no longer available.

Are there any paint "nerds" (no offense) that have some of the old toners so that we could make some "real" organisol, or is that an unrealistic goal. As I recall, the amount of texture additive is quite a small percentage of the mix, so this quart can could make quite a bit of organisol. Or maybe 92% organisol.

I have, as well, a quart of unopened organisol which was also mixed up in the late 70's. But, since the shelf life is 3 or so years, it will have to go to a toxic chemicals collection site.......or eBay

Calm down, Your one liner didn't sound good about
the expert. I also took it as a downer remark
toward Tom. Sorry just my opinion. Now put it
behind you and carry on.

Sorry if it was taken wrong.....Tom is not a household name.....So many experts in the field, just ask them,...so it wasnt a personal dig.

Just wondered where the "two week" paint job idea came from....thats all.

Tom has been doing this stuff for quite a while and I for one value his experience and willingness to share what he has learned.

Its very simple... If you don't want to do it the way Tom has suggested.. don't do it that way.... Belive me, Tom won't care what you do.

Tom has outlined a method that has worked well for him. Take it as that.

Well im sorry im not the nut swinging type, poof out of the blue a new way for 2009.

Thank god this isnt the way it was done back in the day or maybe they would of had time to make 50-60 per year....

Sorry but in 85 I was in the military, not working on the two week paint job.....

I said it wasnt a personal dig at the man and here comes the nut swingers....WT-F.

Why did chrysler elect to use a textured semi-flat black rather then a non-textured?
I always thought, or perhaps read it somewhere, that it was to "hide" minor imperfections in the fiberglass top surfaces.
If that was true: then wouldn't a "ruffer" more-textured surface be more "correct"?

I sprayed a TA hood years back & must have used 1/2gln of PPG mixture before it came out nice: right texture & no zebra stripes.

Just another source to throw in the mix. I think Frank B has some lacquer mix left , but Roger Gibson has a urethane mix that is right on in my opinion, and is easier to apply than lacquer. Price and customer service both good. Another A-12 owner and I both used it and

We did a year or so ago and it came out quite a bit shinnier than we liked and no texture to it at all.

It had so much gloss to it that we had to dry mist it to try and tone it down and still were not totally pleased with it.
