The original tech article was written by me for the SIAC All American Racer magazine in about 1985. It has been revised a few times now as the knowledge base grows. Were you even born yet in 1985 there Mr quik 77??? I don't see where any one is called an expert... I could keep the what has been learned to myself, but instead I share it so people can paint expensive paint properly. If you have nothing positive to contribute please go away.

If you want the 88% correct textured finish you must use DDL9355 Lacquer. 88% correct because the texture additive changed slightly from the orig. If you want the catalyzed, semi-gloss, smooth sheen finish enamel it's DCC9355...
I have a quart can of the original texture additive, which I bought back in the 70's for just such an occurence. It is a powder, as I recall.
Unfortunately, a very nice and knowledgeable PPG tech, named Heather, tells me that there is another important ingredient that is no longer available, plus the original toners are no longer available.
Are there any paint "nerds" (no offense) that have some of the old toners so that we could make some "real" organisol, or is that an unrealistic goal. As I recall, the amount of texture additive is quite a small percentage of the mix, so this quart can could make quite a bit of organisol. Or maybe 92% organisol.
I have, as well, a quart of unopened organisol which was also mixed up in the late 70's. But, since the shelf life is 3 or so years, it will have to go to a toxic chemicals collection site.......or eBay

Calm down, Your one liner didn't sound good about the expert. I also took it as a downer remark toward Tom. Sorry just my opinion. Now put it behind you and carry on.

Tom has been doing this stuff for quite a while and I for one value his experience and willingness to share what he has learned. Its very simple... If you don't want to do it the way Tom has suggested.. don't do it that way.... Belive me, Tom won't care what you do. Tom has outlined a method that has worked well for him. Take it as that.

It had so much gloss to it that we had to dry mist it to try and tone it down and still were not totally pleased with it.
When you say IT what paint are you talking about the dupont hot rod black or the PPG enamal organsol?

Adam Thanks But I have a can with that on it with like half a quart left in it and they can not get the swade or what ever to mix some more. So was looking for the new single stage DCC that he was talking about if it is better than the dupont singke stage hot rod black.

I sprayed a Charger fiberglass hood and set of valve covers with nos organisol DDL9355. Yes I said valve covers. It took almost a qt of paint using a HVLP spraygun laying down 6 coats to obtain proper coverage. It was put over black epoxy primer. The texture is quite different from the currently available PPG lacquer mix. The pictures do not do the "look" justice.
Tech notes:
I used "retarder" [slows the drying time, adds gloss] I made 6 passes, thinning as I went-Cross coating
I spent a lot of time setting up the work area.
It was 60 degrees.
looks real good. I got a qt of organisol from totally auto. i hope it looks as good as those pics you posted.

Tom,I'm not beeing a smart-a$$,but how long has it been since you have sprayed the organisol ? I'd like to see the hood after 10 years, if you have catalized version, it should be fine, but if it's raw lacquer,I don't think it's such a good idea to lay on so many coats especially wet on wet,I wouldn't touch lacquer with a 10 foot stick, but that's just my opinion

DDL 9355 Organisol is very thin paint before you even thin it the required 125-150% or more. To get enough fill of "texture per square inch" it requires more than several passes...and it does not go on thick even wet so you can make 6 passes or more. You need to put it over a well dried black epoxy primer or semi gloss black lacquer if the primer is not black. Remember the flakes need to lay down in the paint not stand on edge so the paint must go on wet and thin. I can show you the same exact organisol formula painted by me around 1984 the exact same way as yesterday currently covering the hood & fender tops of my AAR. It now has well over 60,000 miles of wear on it and could use a refresh but still looks good. See April 2004 MCG magazine cover and story. I'll bet ya didn't know that over time Organisol wears as it ages from washing the car, driving it in the rain [imagine that] or when you wipe it down with a califonia duster. Is that worn effect patina???
