Any wiring gurus here, I have a 67 Valiant that is driving me crazy, after a very expensive tow home yesterday I have decided to rewire the car with an OEM style harness, any suggestions as to whose harnesses are preferred, year one, Evans, etc.

Thanks for any input.

Joey

Maybe Painless Performance? work Those harnesses seem to run about $500 though.

Rewiring an entire car is a non-trivial job. I just finished wiring my '72 Dart by hand, from scratch, and I will never do that again! The number of wires and connections even in a "low-tech" car is amazing. Although it did give me the opportunity to add relays instead of running all the current (such as headlights) through the switch and harness...

what circuit (s) went out? unless it has been majorly butchered you might clean every terminal/connection which will be WAY less work than installing a tailor made new harness and FOR SURE less work than rewiring from scratch like Charles said. I did a bare bones 65 Dart & it was alot of work, way more than I expected. I set the old harness on the floor and made a new one right next to it by adding 1 wire & cutting that counterpart off of the old harness till the new harness took shape and the old one dissappeared. You need to keep the OE colors including wires with tracers (stripes) and there are companies that will sell you specific lengths of any color & with or without tracers & I went to larger wires on some circuits & I crimped/soldered all new brass terminals & added some circuits. Me I would walk away and chill for a day or two then attack the specific problem. If you do go with a new harness find a recommended company which is what you asked for & hopefully an underhood harness will take care of things for you

Check with American Autowire. I did a '53 F250 conversion from 6V + Ground to 12V - Ground with an alternator last year; used one of their harness kits for the '53-'56 F-series, and it was a nice kit. I had to make a few changes as I relocated some electrical items, but they were good to deal with. Best price was through Summit.
It's a task that will definitely occupy your mind and take some time, but it was rewarding and trouble-free.
Using one of their generic harnesses in an FJ40/LS custom build right now. The generic harnesses use GM-style plugs, but it's not hard to change that stuff if need be.

OK, I read the part about

To My knowledge your choices for OEM harness suppliers are limited with M and H being the main supplier. Their website is at webpage
last I knew they did not sell direct.

If you decide to do something different as in make your own we use American autowire exclusively twocents

The most common failure point is the bulkhead. If you take the dash harness out of the car you can remove each connector and close up the gap. Do this one at a time. It is also likely that the main power connector has been hot and melted the plastic as well as opening up.

I am told that M&H is the supplier for Year One, they are here in SoCal but as you said, no direct sales.

I am going to weigh options now, I don't like electrical stuff, much happier porting heads, LOL

I used the M&H harnesses ( all 3 of them) in my 67 coronet during its rotisserie restoration I gave it....

You can only purchase them through Year One, at least that was the way it was when I purchased the harnesses appx 8 years ago.. There were 3 additional sub-harnesses Year One did not have and I sent them to M&H ( after a phone conversation with them) who built new ones for me based on the old harnesses I sent them.. The sub-harnesses were all small one or two wire affairs...

They were not cheap, but you can wait for a 20 or 30% off day event ( at Year One) and save quite a bit of money...

The harnesses were a plug and play and have NEVER given me a problem in the 5400 miles and 7 years of enjoyment I have had driving the car... One of the best purchases I made..

A few years before I got my Coronet on the road, I was at the stereo shop and a black 67 chevelle came in from a fresh resto.. The car was quite beautiful.. Owner told me on its first test drive smoke started pouring from under the hood with the smell of an "electrical fire".. Fortunately the battery cables were not tight on the battery and he pulled over, pulled them off and used his fire extinguisher to put it out..
Pretty bad day to have your car burn down from an electrical fire using a 40-50 year old wiring that came in the car..
