I've got a pair of steel 1350 drive shafts yokes and was going to order a chrome moly 3" driveshaft tube from summit for them.

What mig wire should I use? Standard .035 solid steel/copper or something else? Is it not adviseable to weld chrome moly to steel?

I used to care but....... things have changed

You can buy CM wire for your mig or use carbon steel wire above 70,000 tensile strength. The weld with tig only process is for rollcage. We tig a lot of rearends and shafts as well as other componants at customers request.

I'm curious, what grade steel are you using, 4130?

i've been a welder pipe fitter for along time and perfer tig. 70 series is the best i've found for 4130. i've built several flattrack atv chassis and never seen a broken weld. my current quad is 289# with fuel and dyno's about 103 at the wheel. on a 1/2 mile i can turn faster times than a big block mod.mig welding works good. 200-250 pre heat to get the moister out. just dont cool it down to fast and get it cherry red.

I dunno, it doesnt say.... here is the yoke:

I was going to order this tube:

Maybe I should just run a steel one. I dont think I've got enough power to break a complete steel drive shaft, with steel yokes and 1350 joints.

If I were to run steel, what thickness material should I use?

I looked on the Strange website and it is 4130. Pretty low alloy, 1% Cr, 0.25 % Mo. I did a brief websearch on welding techniques for 4130 and found a bunch. You should be in good shape. Good luck.
