I would like to build a 360 with about 375-400 HP for a 74 Rallye Charger. I have no plans other than street stock as much as I can.
Increase in cam such as an RV cam and will be bored out with headers.

What parts would you use and how much do you think it would be to build?

If your engine needs to be bored it's to get new cylinder walls, not to increase displacement. If you want increased displacement, then a stroker is the way to go.

Everyone will tell you that you can make 400hp with a 360 by making some improvements, the #1 and 2 things will be to add head flow and get compression.

A pretty rudimentary port job on the stock heads will get you enough flow.

9.5:1 compression is about all you can run with iron heads, especially without squish. A better way is the EngineQuest heads which are Magnum heads with the LA intake face. They get you good enough flow plus a much better combustion chamber.

If you have to do anything to your crank, just go stroker with a Scat cast crank. You are buying pistons anyhow. That'll REALLY wake that 360 up, torque'll be right now.

With decent heads and compression you don't really need a huge camshaft to make that kind of power. Comp XE268 will do it, although the Lunati Voodoo series make a little less valvetrain noise.

Here's the bad part. No way you're going to make that amount of power for less than $2000, and that's shopping every part, stock stroke. Heck, a stock rebuild'll probably run that. $3000 will get you more, usable power with the stroker. I'm probably low, especially if you don't do the things you can to cut costs, think manual labor.

Before you buy a single part figure out your budget, then come back here for loads of good advice, even it there are disagreements between members.

R.

Thanks R,

Right... the bored out cylinders were only mentioned because it does need it so I will have that cost.

I'm okay with 3-4K on top of the manual labor. So I'd be looking at what parts I'll need, any head work if I don't simply take the route of heads as you mentioned. There seems to be positive comments on those:

mag heads. quench. dual plane intake. vac sec carb. reasonable SCR for your octane choice so you can run a healthy curve. spot on dist subsystem mods. that is a fairly healthy HP goal but you mentioned a RV (mild) cam.

How about buying something like this 408 crate engine that Jegs has on special through tonight. Remanufactured from Blue Print heard good and bad, but seems like a square deal for a 408 with 375hp/460tq, pan to carb. If put together right. Has anyone bought one recently and if so please let us know good and bad as I'm thinking seriously myself about one.

Originally, it's a 4-bbl 360 with J-heads motor.

The only piece I would like to re-use is the TQ since I had it rebuilt. Or... set it on a shelf?

If I went to a dual plane, such as a Edelbrock LD340... do you know if it would interfere with the TQ, mounting-wise?

RV cam? smile Had to start somewhere. Lets assume I have:
300 - XE268 cam
700 - Quest heads. Do you know if these have an option to the 2.02 valves.
250 - hooker 2 1/2 headers
80 - better oil pan, kevco
350 - Intake

? 400 - Pistons and rings.

If the carb is good keep it & if your intake is a square bore then the spreadbore adapter will easily solve that. I believe you can get EQ heads with 2.02's. You could weld in some baffles cheaper than an all out ($$$) Kevco pan. and a used intake can be had for cheaper than $350. 1&5/8 pri headers. Holler when you can.

What about a 5.9. Mopar Action did a budget build last year. I think they got 450 hp for $2500. It would give you quench heads and a roller cam.

Would this be something that is an automatic thing? All mounting?
It's an original triple black rallye and I figured to have the original motor running in the car was further ahead than investing in a side motor and simply handing this original motor over w the car. If and when it's ever sold. ???

I don't know. Maybe it makes more sense to simple keep the original as it is?

It's all in the punctuation...

Like "Let's eat Grandma!!" or "Let's eat, Grandma!!"

Car Nut, I think you need to read what I wrote and notice date wrote.....offer was good thru Friday at midnight......Price was just under $4k for "full dress" model. As I said if machine work was good and numbers were true, plus warranty it was not a bad deal.
Could one build cheaper yes, but most will be into it more. Plus add the time spent running around for parts, machine work.
"408" stroker 375hp/460tq "Full Dress".
Dress Model Adds:
•Dual Plane Satin Aluminum Intake Manifold
•Holley 750 cfm Manual Choke Vacuum Secondary Zinc Carburetor - 510-0-3310S
•Distributor & Coil

If I'm reading this right. Get the dual plane and add the spreadbore adapter since the TA is.
Also does the size of the collector matter?

Thanks
