I plan to replace an LA 318 in an '82 Ramcharger with the NP435 4-speed trans. I was told that I would need a bellhousing and hydraulic clutch setup from a newer truck to make the magnum exhaust manifolds work. Can anyone confirm this? Also seeking any other advice or wisdom from anyone else who has done this swap.

I've got a carb on it. I'm going to put the cam snout extender on it and put a timing cover from the LA and use the mechanical fuel pump.

dodge uses a piece that bolts to thepedel structure with 4 bolts.
the hole in fire wall is just that. a hole bigger than needed.
master cyl goes in hole then twist locks into the bracket under dash. has a small plastic roll pin to lock it from turning.
a rubber groumet is on the MC and covers/seals the hole in fire wall.
on a truck before hydro clutch there are 4 dimples in the pedal structure but not drilled. and no hole in firewall.
the MC bracket is like a peace of angle bent into a 90* with 4 holes for mounting on 1 side and a large hole with notch for MC to twist lock into.
I have some pics of my hydro clutch 5 speed swap into a 85 chassis. used all bolt on dodge pieces.

Maybe I should back up a little with the history of this truck. When I bought it, it had the magnum engine with the LA exhaust manifolds in it already, but it was a poorly done swap. The carb was jetted way too lean, the exhaust leaked everywhere, the electric fuel pump kept blowing fuses, the Y-pipe was wedged tight against the bottom of the trans, and a few other problems that I don't remember, so I pulled it out and dropped in a '79 318 that I had, but now that engine is getting tired and burning oil so I want to give the magnum another chance and do the swap right. What's the difference between the magnum and the LA flywheel? I've had the same one on both engines and didn't notice any vibration with either. How can I tell which engine it is correct for?

here in this pic you see the red bracket that mounts the clutch MC mounted under the dash on side of pedal/colum structure.
it does not touch the firewall and the wall needs no support added.
this pic was in reference to the bulkhead connection hole being smaller on 87-93 trucks in some other posts here on moparts when I swaped the 85 cab for a 91 cab with 5 speed.
it is the same size but moved over slightly for the clutch MC

this piece is like finding hens teeth in the JY
all mopar did was add the offset flat stock with the stud for the MC rod to a mech clutch pedal. they seem the same other than the add hydo piece.

this is it sitting with a set of hedman 79080 2x D series headers. fit is great but I went to put the mini starter on the NV4500 hydro bell and was a no go due to #7 tube in the way.
the hedman 79170 4x4 header fit 72-93 4x4 chassis and #7 tube is moved for starter clearance/now fits a short LA starter or a mini starter. (you can R&R the mini with out header removal)
the hardest 2 things I see for you are the hydro clutch MC mounting bracket and drilling the 4 holes in the dimples your 82 has in that spot.
if you drilled a pilot hole in the firewall from inside dead center of the bracket while mounted a 2.5 hole saw would take the firewall out easy enough.

LOL! I did it the hard way and replaced the 85 cab for a 91 cab to keep from having to drill those 4 holes under the dash to mount the MC.
I was told the NV4500 5 speed would need the 93 crossmember moved back 2" in the 85 chassis and need new holes drilled for it.
NOT! I trimed the stock 85 2x crossmember/turn trans mount around 180* with some trimming/bolted it right in the stock 85 chassis location.
just enough clearance to clear the 5th gear/tailhousing.

Thanks for all the advice. I don't have any definite plans yet, just gathering info at this point, but if I decide to use magnum exhaust manifolds and an hydro clutch, I will use the correct factory bellhousing. I would like to use all factory parts if possible, I just need to know what parts will fit and work together and what year trucks I need to look for in the salvage yards. I like manifolds better than headers, but if I decide to use headers, do you know of any that would work with the factory 82 mechanical clutch linkage? I'd rather not use the LA style exhaust manifolds. Seems to be a waste to use the high flowing magnum heads and then choke them off with the LA exhaust system which is why I was thinking of magnum manifolds. Wow! I see you have been buys posting pics while I was posting this. Thanks again! I will look at all this info and try to come up with a definite plan.

SFT, whip yourself with a wet noodle.
Flywheels are the same. You have to know what bellhousing goes with your flywheel, but past that both are neutral balanced and have the same hub.
All Mopar smallblocks smaller than 340 cubic inches are internally balanced. Poly, 273, 318, 5.2 Mag, all the same neutral balance. I believe the 4.7 cammer as well is N. B.
NP435s have a 5.125 front register which is the same as the A833OD.
R.
