Having read where someone on this board opened a post due their being stuck far from home, looking for troubleshooting assistance, I got to thinking. What spares would you keep on an 01 Cummins 6 speed? Are there common parts to keep onboard that could keep you from needing a tow far from home? I already keep a spare lift pump (the original), having swapped in a new one when I moved the pump back by the tank, along with rad hoses and a belt. I've heard tell of fuel shutoff solenoids failing. I have 173K on mine and it hasn't let me down yet, and I want to keep it that way.

i was taken down by bad fuel on a sunday (holiday) morning (long road trip)---plugged my fuel filter---the parts stores open could only order my diesel filter---when i finally found them i bought 2---the second lasted from KC to salina where i put on the 3rd--then drove home...very irritating ordeal....

The fuel shutoff solenoid issue only applies to 12 valve trucks. In your case you will be replacing the complete injection pump. Which if you haven't replaced it yet, I would be prepared for it to fail eventually. The injection pump and lift pump are the Achilles heel of an early 24 valve.

I carry a filter, a lift pump, and if I have the race trailer behind me I have the tools to do the injection pump. I also replaced the solenoid contacts in my starter a few years ago.
