I've had a relatively newer rebuilt 440 sitting in the corner of my shop for about 10 years. It was a basic rebuild .30 over, 906s, purple shaft. I've decided to freshen it up before dropping it in with new gaskets. What's the best rebuild with specs book available. I've never rebuilt an engine so a more step by step would be helpful. When I did originally get it running there was no lope. I imagine it was the roadrunner resto cam. I may also decide to go with a more modern cam. I have a Holley street dominator intake I am going to use. I have some Hedman shorties but may go full length over manifolds.

Have you tried 'Mopar Engines Manual' - has many combo's to use with lots of pics.

I like "How to Rebuild Big-Block Mopar Engines" by Don Taylor. I think I noticed a few errors in it, but it is pretty basic and explains things well.

AndyF here came out with a more 'modern' big block engine book than the Mopar one, might be something to consider as well..

Good point, Oz. The Taylor book is from 1994, and Andy's book is currently on my Amazon wishlist.

Doesn't Andy's kind of assume you have rebuilt engines before? I thought i read that somewhere.

Books are fairly cheap. I would suggest that you read them all.

Yes, think he did mention that..but as said, I would get and read through a few different ones still for sure.

(I've got a bunch of books still and handy to be able to go through different ones for different things)

There are a few books out there that can help and add useful information to the factory shop manual.
There was a book out about 30 years ago that has some good basic rebuild tips in it.
I don't know if you can find it new but I still enjoy looking through it years later. The parts and technology is a little dated but there are some tidbits you may find helpful.

I have them all too. On the MP ones, they have had the same info in them from their first print. If you get a set of old ones, they are just as good as the new. There was also a book done by Chuck Sennatore awhile before Andy's so see if you can find that one too. You can never have enough refference material. Andy's is more up to date and shows lots of street combos. Rockin book!

Really the HP book, "How to rebuild..." is all you need if you're just going to take it apart and put it back together again.

BUT I have to ask why? Many members are running engines that were put together 20 or more years ago, with no problems. Once the gaskets are in place and torqued down, what is going to happen if the engine is in a nice dry shed? I have valve stem seals that are 20 years old or older, NOS, and they are still flexible. The same goes for the other seals.

In this particular case I'd agree with the philosophy of "Don't fix it if it ain't broke."

Use the energy you were going to spend on this project to get a car on the road. I know all about interminable engine projects that never go a foot under their own power. I've done it many times.

I have this book and a motor that also has been sitting. I'm not bashing the book by any means. I just want to check for oil gallery plugs and what ever else I may need to check before installing and couldn't find this info in that book.

Oil gallery plugs are mentioned on page 44. He says there are four plugs, and tells where they're located. He goes on to say that the cleaning method will be demonstrated in Chapter 5.
