I'm thinking of changing to a manual steering gearbox in my 71 Dart. Does it matter what the gearbox comes out of? A,B,C,E, truck, van.

Not sure but don't forget you"ll have to change steering columns or shafts also.

The manual box in my 65 Coronet is from an A body. The outer shell of the column doesnt need to be changed usually, just the shaft. (easy to do really) Youll likely need a pitman arm for your car for a manual box. I didnt check to see if the power steering pitman arm fit the manual box.

IIRC A,B, and E body cars share the same manual box. Likely though the most common manual steer box will come from an A body as many more A bodies came with manual steering and B or E bodies.

Doc.

I used to care but....... things have changed

There was a pitman arm change in 73 so the early arm and the late arm won't interchange. On need to watch the way the stud from the arm goes throught the drag link also. Some come up and some go down.

That is just the reason I love this site so much. So, you're saying I can find a floor shift power steering column to replace my column shift unit then just find the steering shaft from a manual steering car whether it's three on the tree or AT column shift to complete the conversion. I got a little confused about the pitman arm though. Which pitman arm do I need manual or power?

Yes and Yes on the steering column. Any manual shaft will fit any "tube" for a given year/model.

As far as the pitman arm, I "THINK" they are different manual to power, but dont quote me on that. Perhaps someone who has put a power pitman arm on a manual box will chime in.

I've swaped the PS pitmanarm to the manual box during changeovers.
