Thank

Which block are you going to use, low deck 400 or a high deck 440? It really makes a difference on the both the rod length and main bearings shruggy I've built both with the 3.90 or 3.91 stroke cranks, they rock up

The block is a 400,and I used a 440 crank for the 470.

Welcome aboard! 400 block/440 crank/440 rods/KB 280 pistons (iirc). I'd offset grind the crank to get 470 cubes. Not sure if you need/want 360 oiling main bearings but that would be my personal choice (rods are the end of the (oiling) line & the cause of alot of oil starvation mishaps. You did say street but you know how that goes! I'd consider some stealth heads/get quench/desired SCR/appropriate cam for a spot on long block then work on ign/fuel/exh etc. Post how it goes

A 470 is 4.375" 400 block with offset ground 440 crank, new stroke is 3.91, and rod journal is 2.200", bigblock chevy size.

A 6.535 chevy rod will give bore/stroke of 1.67 which is good for street but you could go even shorter on the rod to 6.385, which is bigblock chevy +0.250 length, giving R/S ratio of 1.63.

Zero deck with the 6.535" rod is 1.490 CH
Zero deck with the 6.385" rod is 1.640 CH

The 470 is quite close dimensionally to a 455 buick engine and those engines liked to rev, at least until they blew due to oiling issues. I loved my '70 GS455, it was a blast to drive. Your 470 will be even better because of stronger and lighter components.

Under no circumstances go longer than 6.535 on the rod length, not for a mostly street engine.

R.

The answer on which rods to use depends on several factors. First question is which rod journal does your crank have? If you have a BB Chevy rod journal then there are more options than if the crank has Mopar journals.

I'd probably use a 6.70 long BBC rod but it depends on the piston choice as well as other things. The 440Source 470 kit uses a 6.535 rod which is an okay choice also.

It seems you skipped over the part where he said he was going to build a 470. Everything in your reply was aimed at a 451.
