I drove my '69 Super Bee to the local cruise night last night. It did something it has never done in the 30+ years I've owned it. When manually shifting into 2nd gear from 1st the car immediately stops as if I slammed on the brakes. There is not any raking sound or anything like that in the trans.
I have to manually put it back in 1st to move again. If I put it in Drive it shifts 1-3 great. What has happened?!?!

The rear band failed to release on the manual 1-2 upshift. If it only did it once and was OK thereafter, the servo piston probably cocked in it's bore.

It wouldn't do it every time I shifted manually but most of the time. I've shifted manually for many years and it's habit so I would do it even when I wasn't intending too.

What's the fix?

I always thought STOP stood for Slow To Obvious Pause

There are mods to the rear servo piston that help prevent cocking but the best solution is to install a billet rear servo kit...available from many sources including the Swap Meet section here.

Will it hurt to drive it using "Drive" and no shifting manually?
