axel seals leaking so i figured to replace the old bearigs with green bearings. are they good for street use? a mopar action tech article said they should only be used for drag race applications. do we have members using them on the street? any problems?. thanks and have a safe and happy new year.

You will be fine on the street with them. Many were used OEM. But I wonder why you would spend the money to change over from a superior set up because of a leaky seal. It is no big deal to replace a seal and to clean and repack the tapered bearings. Just because they may have a lot of miles on them means nothing if they are in good condition and not scored.

thanks for the reply. i haven't pull apart the axels yet so i don't know the condition of the bearings. i had just heard of members changing over to them and was wanting some advice about them. if my bearings are fine i will probably just keep them. thanks again.

Did Chrysler (OEM) use ball bearings on the rear axel? Or are you refering to GM.

I think ford and Toyota used them from the factory.

I have them in my street driven dart BTW.

Ball wheel bearings were alot more common than tapered versions. In addition to the MILLIONS of Ford, GM, Toyota etc.. vehicles, 7 1/4" Mopar rears also used sealed ball bearings.

Three yrs and no problems. You'll get replies telling you they are junk but if you ask them if it's 1st hand experience most will say no.

well I have to say what I think mostly of ball bearing axles are not pressed in axle I think, they are simply fit between axle and housing like any regular bearing, and then the C clips at the end, into carrier, doesn't need adjust from one againts the other so never a side load against bearings cups, at leats not like the 8 3/4 design.

On ball bearings design WITHOUT C clips at the end, maybe you get more load on bearings than regular assemblies with C clips, so is being just holded by the pressure itself with axle.

I know,is something extreme, but something to think about depending on where ( town characteristics ), and how you plan to drive it

If you look back at my post I stated that he will get along fine with the green bearings but why change from a superior bearing and needlessly spend the money to have them switched if there is nothing wrong with the present bearings other than to clean, pack, reinstall the axles and adjust the preload. It isn't like it is a daily chore.
