I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 and I've been noticing that my head lights will go real bright and then back to normal when driving at night. Does that sound like a voltage reg. going bad?

I'd be checking the PCM (computer) ground & any other major ground points...Chrysler took the voltage regulator out & use the PCM to control the alternator output...

I did not want to hear that answer. I replaced the PCM about 3 yrs. ago.

If the PCM ground is marginal you might see intermittant drivability issues & the charging voltage referance is directly tied to reading the ground & power so if the ground is marginal the voltage can/will spike...

Have the alternator tested, some of the diodes may have burnt out?

in the 1994 to 1998 Rams a lot of the headlight switches went bad.

I would have thought that a 2000 would have had an improved design but you might be suspicious of the switch

you might look through the TSB's here:

I also agree that bad ground connections can lead to all kinds of weird symptoms in Rams

I will check the grounds. I always thought that if you had problems with a PCM your engine check light will go on the dash. My engine check light has not gone on. Thanks for the link on the TSB's.
