I was reading on the Hotchkis site about shims to correct midline alignment between the front and rear wheels ( thrust alignment) by shimming the rear leaf spring mount. They talk about using an alignment shop to measure and determine if there is a misalignment. How can we do this accurately at home? I think I may have this issue as my car (Cuda) does not want to launch straight under heavy acceleration. Thanks!

Tape it. Also check that all the bushings in the rear leaf shackles, etc., are good.

I invented those shims years ago. I keep them in stock on my site - Bergmanautocraft.com. Let me know with any questions.

Dave - Best thing to do is to find one of the frame measurement holes that is symmetrical left to right. I do a cross measurement from the hole in the frame to the center bolt of the leaf spring. That will give you a good idea of what is going on in the rear. Usually, the pass side needs a shim or two. I make them in 1/8".

Slick thumbs

The FSM should have the chassis drawings in the body section that shows the correct frame measurement hole locations.

If you can find an alignment shop that not only can do a real alignment adjusting caster camber and toe, that's a feat in itself these days. To go the extra mile and be able to measure and correct thrust angle is not going to be easy with the current crop of "set the toe and let it go" mentality.

Took me a while to find a good alignment shop, but I go to the one that does all the heavy duty trucks in town.
