What I'm considering is finding a clean 2000-2001 X Cab truck and swapping out my '96 X Cab. My truck is a '96 3500 X Cab Cummins Auto with power everything that's a bit rough and the interior is quite tired. I like the half doors the later models offer.
Will a gas engine instrument panel harness plug into my diesel underhood harness? I would guess I would have to find/buy a diesel instrument cluster at the very least for the later dash.
Has anyone tried this? What am I overlooking as a road block?
Thanks in advance.

Only time I've seen it done and actually completed the guy put a 2000 cab onto a 1997 truck and reused his 97 dash. He has said the wiring harness was totally different, even the door harnesses.

Thanks for the reply.
It may not be worth the effort if I would have to keep the early dash just to gain the half doors. Any idea if same years share like harnesses? As in finding a clean '96-'97 x cab GASOLINE and putting it on a diesel chassis, would I have to transfer the dash and wiring harness too?

I have an '01 QC Gas and if you need any photos of the firewall, wiring harnesses, or other specific areas for reference, just ask.

Thanks
It's not a surprise that most earlier trucks are a bit worn but swapping to a later 2000-2001 cab sounds like more work than it's worth. I really need to crunch the numbers and decide either way. One option I was thinking was using the later cab but transferring the entire dash panel complete with early wiring and adapting either the power window wiring or use the early window motors and wiring in the later doors.
Is it really worth the effort?

Depends how bad you want those rear doors. I used to have a 99 with the rear doors and they were so nice to have there. The 97 I have now really makes me miss em.

I say it's worth it. 220,000 miles later I have no rattles, no air leaks, no wind noise, or any other issues with the QC doors.

We've had both bodies and everything is a fight getting in and out without the doors.

I hear ya. That was the best upgrade they did to those trucks.
