Hey guys, I replaced the GM 1 wire 70 amp on my Cobra Replica with a 100 amp unit i got from Summitt. The one thing I noticed with the old one is that sometimes the voltmeter would indicate 12V or sometimes less which told me (obviously) it wasn't putting a charge to the battery. The thing I found out is there is a minimum RPM the alternator needs to see before it switches on and because I had a small 6" crank pulley and a large 5" Alternator pulley, on a normal around town cruise that puppy would hardly put out at all. I went with a standard 2 1/2" pulley onthis one all I need to do is burp it one time and POW....14+ volts on the meter. I knew about this but since I don't need that extra 3HP from the big pulley I decided to move the 70A over to my Rocky. I run 3 electric fans onthe Cobra so there's a constant pull onthe battery it seemed to make the most sense to kill 2 birds with one stone.
Just wantedto pass along that a 1 wire with underdriven pulley can sometimes cause more hassle then they're weorth.
We ran into the same problem. On a street car you need to overdrive the alternator aprox 3 times the crank speed for decent results.
