I talked to Charlie Gilbertson about building me a new dry sump pan a few weeks ago. He tells me he is thinking he will be closing shop. This really is a bummer to anyone who has or knows his work.

From what I hear he IS closing shop and would not take an order for a new pan. I hear he lost two long time employees and does not want to train new people, or possibly just a shortage of younger people who want to work hard and learn a trade. I saw Mancini quit carrying them on their website which is what prompted my inquiry as we are in need of two oil pans. Talked to a Canadian friend of mine and he told me the same. Hopefully I am wrong but did not sound good.

This is bad news for the Mopar racers! That guy knew how to build a pan, and make it fit your car. I've had 3 and all were great!

I honestly can't blame him one bit on the retraining deal. I personally retired at the age of 53 (3 years before I planned on) because of it. 33 years of Millwrighting, Allegheny Ludlum Steel discontinued the government financed apprenticeship program. They started hiring 20-30 year old guys with mechanical papers then it was on the job training. These ( I call them kids) wanted to surf the web and text all day instead of learning the job. Department heads told my boss they didn't want the kids and keep sending the oldtimers. I didn't mind doing my share but slowly we all got tired of forced overtime, getting sent on every break-down, and watching the kids drink coffee in the shop everyday. Happily retired now and enjoying every day of it.

Charlie is a personal friend and is still building pans for BGR.He isn't doing any retail fabbing until he figures out if he is closing the doors or may sale the business to and outside party. The business may relocate down south. We can only hope what ever decision he makes is the best for him.We certainly wish Charlie the best,we have enjoyed a long and respectful business relationship and enjoyed our candid conversations.

Charlie has been a great guy to go to for pans. He has built a number of custom pans for me and is always willing to try something new or share some info.

But we're all getting older and at some point a person just doesn't want to get up early and bend sheetmetal all day! Not to mention hassle with people over unpaid invoices and wrong material being delivered and all the other hassles that go along with running a small business.

Thats sad to hear, but at age 74 it's probably time to take a vacation. It's to bad that he didn't have a guy that could have taken over the business .Like the above post, I also have seen the young guy's that seem to think that the cell phone is more important than the job there supposed to be doing.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

I got one in a deal on a R1 engine I bought, unfortunately I can't use it. It's for a chassis car and mine is stock suspension. Very nice pans, it's sad to see craftsmen like Charlie close their doors.

He sounds like a great craftsman and a nice guy. In the entertainment business he would definitely be a prime candidate for a much deserved "roast". I hope he chooses the path best for him at this point in life.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Last summer when I destroyed my first Charlie's pan I called him looking for another one. I was in a hurry trying to get the car back together for the 10 Grand Nats at Norwalk. I ordered one Friday and Sunday morning drove up to his shop and picked it up. Super nice guy who still understands what customer service is. He built that pan on the weekend and was wiping it off just as I walked in his shop. Showed me around the shop and talked for a while. He told me the story of his long time employees leaving. The industry will miss his workmanship, but at 74 years young it is time for him to enjoy his golden years.
Now, if I only had the cash to buy the business turnkey! Beep

As much as I had to see him close up I can certainly understand his decision.

Who else is out there we can look to for his quality and customer service?

When I talked to charlie I asked if he was going to sell the business, He didn't think anybody would be interested in purchasing it, for whatever reason.

I wish somebody who might have an interest would contact him before too much time passes.

I have my hands full over here with gaskets

Guys like Charlie never fully retire so if the right person stepped up and bought it I'm sure he would do some consulting work. When you work that hard to get a quality company up and running for years, you would hate to see it die.

...Seems I remember YOU saying you were retired,,,,,maybe YOU could step up and set an example about "never fully retiring" and buy it??

Thats too bad.. I talked to Charlie a couple of times
and he gave me some ideas on pans that I was building...
he knew I was only making mainly stuff for myself...
but he does deserve the retirement
