I have two trannies. One is stamped H3 the other H4C. They look the same externally, but when I went to move them I noticed the H4C seemed to weigh more. Can someone tell me what the difference is?

Thanks

When you say "stamped" do you mean raised casting numbers? Raised casting numbers are near useless for identifying a trans.

Thanks for the response! I stand corrected, yes they are raised. Where and what kind of stamped number sequence should I find?

Thanks

If it's a Mopar trans built after '67 look for a machined raised pad on the passenger side of the case, near the front.

If it's not Mopar or earlier than '68 a pic would help.

Well here's what info I got from the area you suggested.

1. PP8332742
9A22078 0054

2. PP8332599
LM23P9E116420 0273

Looks like they are both 833's. I could have sworn there was a difference. The one seems to weigh more than the other. I'm guessing one is drained and the other isn't. Is number one tranny a replacement part number and number two tranny from a production car?

Would there be a preference on which one to rebuild from a non mechanical condition perspective?

Thanks for your insight.

Todd

Number one has a partial VIN which is most common, number two has the full VIN which (I think) was only used in the '69 model year.

They're both from '69 cars, number one is from a car built at the Lynch Road plant so it's from a B body. Number two is from a Dart built at the Los Angeles plant; the P engine designator is for the 340 and it should have a shorter tail housing which accounts for the difference in weight.
