This is the huge 3 bolt deal

My old napa starter started getting tight after the engine heated up. I replaced with another napa and it grinded every time i tried to start. That happened for a day or so and i loosened it and was able to rotate it slightly. I thought i cured it until a single time last weekend when it happened again.

Any ideas? Anyone ever put a dab of lithium grease on the teeth to help it mesh? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif" alt="" />

No on the grease fixing it. I'll assume you tightened it good. bell bolts tight? otherwise take it off & another visual & see if you can see anything loose/out of whack. Something is changing (moving). Holler back with any news

Are you sure the flywheel teeth are not worn badly and causing a drag? Upon inspection you will notice, as I have, that the flywheel will have three areas of noticeable wear where the starter drive engages. That is about all the wear areas that could change over time...of course if the bolts from the bellhousing to the block have loosened that is a different matter. I have seen a lot of weird issues on the cars that rolled through the wrecking yard I worked in and I have not seen everything yet.

Flywheel teeth were good in most areas. 1 area they were worn a little. Other area had burrs

Just seems wierd that it changed with the starter....

I thought about filing the starter bolt holes a little because it is hard to engage it manually with inspection cover off

Ok, to follow up:

So far, I believe it is ok. I elongated the holes with a large rat tail file on the starter body itself. This allowed me to move it another 1/8" or so away from the flywheel in order for it engage nicely.

When I took it off before, I could see that it would hit the flywheel but not engage all of the time.

It is possible that the bell housing is slightly moved, but I thought these were like a 727 (mine is NP435) where they have dowels/pins.

Time will tell. Thanks for helping!

Back to square one. It did it again. It may be a coincidence but it seems to only be if the motor is hot after driving a while.

I may try another starter since the old one didn't do it. Is there anywhere I can send the old starter to get rebuilt?

not being a smart azz but try your yellow pages. most alternator shops also rebuild starters.

Maybe you are missing a bell housing dowel.

The problem is the old starter would never grind when warm. The old one would crank slow.

both indicate mis-alignment. maybe some shims?

have you actually looked at it while the starter is being engaged?

I did with the inspection cover off. I thought I had it engaging smoother. Now it is starting to seem like a heat related issue....

I thought so too when I read this thread. Headers? you might have to fab up a heat shield or wrap the area of the exhaust near the starter.

Well it did it cold so not heat. I am dropping the old one off at a local shop but fearful that it could be the bad spot on the flywheel. Just doesn't make sense that it started grinding with the new starter....
