My T/A's engine is looking pretty now that it is painted and put back together!
Had a question on the fuel pump though. My resto shop says it should be painted on engine per Dave Wise's standards guide.
Barry's low mile T/A DVD has pictures of its pump being unpainted. I've seen it both ways on restored cars.
What is correct?

The bell housing normally got over spray from the engine, but some survivors with almost full coverage have been seen. Not often though.

Are you going to have the car back together in time for the reunion in July?

Doubtful car will be done this year, I've somehow managed to dump the equivalent of about 2 years takehome pay into this moneypit project so far, and I've got to stop the hemorrhaging for a while and try to catch up with a bunch of other stuff in my life I've been putting off due to $$.
I really can't take any vacation days from my work this July either.
So it's coming home to my garage soon, I'll throw a cover on it, and I will work on rebuilding my finances and try to regain my sanity!
But if one of my IL lottery St Patricks Day raffle tickets gets drawn tomorrow, or someone will buy my '71, maybe that will change!
Otherwise me and my neighbor Mopar Mitch have both vowed we will be there with our cars in 2020!

Wow, looks fantastic - it really came together for you, Mastershake340, good for you - and your years of researching and posting here combined with advise/tips/pics from the generous members here, I admire so much of what gets shared / exchanged on mmoparts, thanks for the post.

I have had a few sets of Mopar fuel pump bolt heads that had a good coverage of either orange or blue paint...the pump that came on my '70 and bolts have no traces of blue paint at all.

Bare, lightly oversprayed or fully painted...since all 3 forms are apparently found then grew to be as acceptable/ still cause for disagreement! - I would keep them fully painted as it is a done deal, keep your eye out for the survivors built same month or even same week. Good luck this year.

Mastershake, here is a thread you might want to check out. For the record, I have been studying 340's intensively for several years looking for such details. I have yet to see a single 100% original example of a 68-71 era small block fuel pump with any paint what so ever. It's become evident that they were either masked off very well or installed after paint.

Bell housing coverage did vary, but as mentioned, most got partial coverage with a fair amount of bare aluminum showing towards the rear. They weren't the target of the painted, they were just in the way and got over spray on them.

Scott thanks for the 340 detail link, I had studied it in the past but that thread had slipped out of my memory in recent times!
My car's unrestored identical twin 2 VINs past mine resides in the area and I will need to look at it again soon and study its engine for details. As I've probably mentioned here in the past, my T/A was the first of a group of 4 consecutive VIN'd identical cars ordered by Mr Norms. I'm JH23J0Bxxx736, xxx738 is the unrestored one and is about 15 miles west of my home, and I haven't seen xxx739 but I've heard it exists and is in Georgia. It would be really cool if we can get these 3 cars together someday, even cooler if xxx737 still exists and turns up!
There's another low mile FE5 unrestored T/A in the area too, I don't recall if its engine is original though. Hopefully I'll run into that car at a local show this season. Red T/A's are about as common in the Chicago area as 5.0 mustangs it seems like.

I would echo everything I have found is unpainted fuel pumps on small blocks. Here is my interpretation of the trans/bellhousing. Mine was original and I took really good pictures of the overspray before cleaning.

100% original engine paint here, paint over spray on the bell housing. Some has flaked off over the years but coverage was thin and sparse from day one, this is a pretty typical example of what I have seen.

Fuel pump. same engine, 100% original. Based on this example I'd say installed after paint, zero over spray and a small amount of paint evidence under the pump flange area.

This is the 340 I restored attempting to just paint the engine and allow over spray on the bell to fall wherever it may. I probably got more paint on the bell than 90% of the factory painters did but a modern gun with a different nozzle and spray pattern coupled with a bit more attention to detail likely resulted in better coverage than most line workers produced. I'd call this a "better than average" outcome.
