I picked up a column from a console car which must be a '74 unit. I noticed the metal bearing, but the shaft still has play with bearing installed. Also noticed another smaller metal ring (that can slide up and down) around the shaft but have no clue what it's for. I'll try to post some pics, but anyone have any ideas on what the smaller ring could be?
Also, if metal '74 type bearing were to be removed, is a plastic reproduction type interchangeable?
Thanks!
In this picture, on the white paper towel you can see the bearing support, the bearing itself in the support, the spring and the clip you mentioned. Just so you know there are 4 parts.
Installed, makes for nice tight setup that works better than the poor plastic sleeves they sell repo. Yes the repro could be used on any year challenger.
I got a new replacement bearing from the dealer 10 years ago, just the bearing, the support and the rest the rest was NA.
Picture of the support and bearing separate.
