I am going to be installing new glass in my 72 Challenger using the butyl tape. I heard that I should use primer on the frame even if it is new paint. What primer should I use?

Also, I need to ask how these trim clips for the rear glass are installed. Does anyone have a picture?
Thanks.

If the frame already has paint/corrosion protection not sure why you would need to apply primer. If it were bare metal, but would think the reason for primer would be simply to discourage rust in this critical area. Only a guess, but if Primer is suggested, maybe it provides a bit of surface roughness as compared to glossy paint. If primer is used, automotive primer?

As for the clips, not sure about the longer straight'ish items with the diamond-shaped holes, but the boxier, squarish clips, using the center hole, mount to short flanged-top studs that are spaced around the frame. They are Trim Clips used to secure the Stainless Steel (looks like Chrome) Edge Trim that covers the window frame channel.

I have seen special replacement trim clips that have their own studs of sorts, that have screws that cause a cylinder to expand when tightened and mount in holes drilled into the frame edge.

The primer is for adhesion, It was made by 3M for glass and came in a small can with a brush on the lid. primer was black. I did MANY back in the day.

They do not mean primer as in paint primer. It is a liquid used to promote adhesion. Most times it will come with the kit. If not I use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface. Those long clips go on each side on the bottom of the channel. They will set the height of the window. They are placed a few inches from the edge if I remember correctly.

Still available and that's what I just used.

Thanks for your help guys!
I ended up replacing all the sheetmetal on this car including the roof. The car was a rust bucket. I didn't have any way to know where the clips went.
Thanks again.
