No, the coupler isn't there to provide a collapsible feature, that is built inside the column. The coupler is there mostly for NVH and allow for minor flexing between the gear and the column.
It also provides some road feel dampening.

Im gonna have to figure out how to go from 1" DD to stock coupler without some big fat adapter.
