If I decide to go with a solid cam in my 440 what rocker set up would be best? Adjustable Mechanical arms-I think someone here told me this wont work on a 440 only max wedge? So what would be the way to go using a solid cam? Thamxs

Youll get alot of opinions on this, but I will suggest three things......

1. Dont buy cheap roller rockers, there are loads of horror stories with them.

2. I would suggest Isky/Crane ductile iroon rockers. Cheap and strong.

3. You didnt dpecify what cam and combo youre running, but if its really wild, youll need to step up to something serious.

I also agree. I run the Isky ductile adjustable rockers on my 63 and my son has the Crane version on his Dart. Both have worked flawless on our mild builds. Ron

There is a place up in Washington or somewhere that rebuilds, rebushes and bluprints the Isky Ductile Iron rocker arms. Heck, I still have a set of them down in the basement.

The only problem with them I remember, was that they could gaul themselves and the rocker shaft. Once bushed and with a hardened shaft, I think they would be a great reliable set-up.

Bannana groove shafts take care of that issue, the same company that installs bushings also sells shafts...

I had and liked the Isky's but had problems with the sides wearing on the shaft retainers. That was cured by canning the springs and using spacers - at the time there was nothing on the market so I used bronze bushings. Also, don't use stock shafts as they can go oval when tightened down and that's what causes the gauling of the inside of the rockers. Any good aftermarket shaft will cure the problem, you don't necessarily need grooved ones. TRW's worked like a charm.

If you can find a set of the Isky rockers, go for it.
However the Cranes are another story, Crane had a bad run for ductile iron rockers they were not hardened properly, the valve stem would wear into the contact point. We went through a long argument with Crane, at first they denied any quality problem then they conceded certain issues. This took several months of debating back/forth with Crane and eventually we tossed the rockers into the dumpster and installed Harland Sharps, never looked back. This was about a couple of years back, and hopefully now they have kleened up their BS.

For me I will never use another Crane product, even if it was free for my weedwacker..

Just my ..

I had THOUGHT that as of recent years, isky and crane were the same rockers. Didnt one start making them for the other?

I just talked to Crane about this and they are providing them to Isky as well.

Years ago (over 10?) the Iskys were visually different than the cranes. Like a rib along the top of the body. Man us Mopar guys really pay thru the $$ when we need to deviate from the stamped steel stockers. I remember my brother buying Harland Sharpes back in 1986 for his 440. Back then he spent 2 weeks pay for a set (around $375 in 1986). Adj after adj kept breaking. They kept sending new ones for free until finally all the bad adjusters were weeded out. Seems their vendor had a "FURNACE PROBLEM" and a bad batch of adjusters made it thru. That infamous re ocurring "furnace problem" has increased business for a company called Smith Brothers.

There are many things that are virtually identical except for the name on them. Isky and Crane rockers were no exception. However, Isky used a separate pressed-in hardened tip whereas crane cheaped out and just left the cast iron as the contact point. I'm no metalurgist but I doubt you can harden cast iron without it becoming too brittle for the application. In any case, the Cranes wore and the Isky's didn't.

These days, with so many aluminum rollers on the market I'd be looking at a decent set of those. By the time you bush a set of used Indy's you'd be into them for more money than a new set of aluminum. There is nothing wrong with running an unbushed aluminum rocker on a GOOD shaft - which you'll need even with Isky's.

True, but most "cheap" rockers today have needle bearings for the shafts. Heck even some of the good ones have bearings.

Ive got just under $100 in my used set of isky rockers and hd mancini shafts.
