On my Shaggin Wagon, I put a 4bbl intake and edelbrock 600 avs on it. I was doing some tuning yesterday and decided to drive it without the dog house or aircleaner on it. it wont even open the air door on the secondaries when floored.

thinking about a 450 holley. Never tried one but they have just one squirter and open the secodaries mechanically. Any have any thoughts on this?

It's been a long time, but I think the spring is adjustable on that.

put a dang 650 vac secondary holley and be done with it. will give your more performance and better mileage. you are way over thinking this

It takes air speed to open the secondaries. Weak motors move no air, so all you have to do is use a weaker spring on the secondary doors.

I wouldn't use the 450 Holley. The 650 Quick suggested will be fine. But same deal, you will have to tune the secondary with a weaker diaphragm

but that is no different the the 600 Edel I already have on it. If it wont pull the seconday air flap open, and I think I have it as lose as it can be, why would you guys think the Holley secondaries will open?

well for one i wouldn't put a eddy carb on anything they are both adjustable with springs. they wont open until needed. how long did you hold the pedal down? it wont open the second you mash the gas either way.

The Edel carbs work great. I know some people hate them but they really work very well. I was pushing the air door open with my finger Damn thing is so slow. I drive it every day but its just such a dog

Ray...I have heard of motors being weak enough that they'd never open the secondaries like you're seeing.
Seems like you have a few options...deal w/ it, rebuild it, or get a mechanical secondary carb.

I removed the 318 and installed a 360 I built many many years ago in my van to give it some more get up and go and it worked out real nice. .030 over 360, RV cam, headers, LD4B intake, 650 vacuum holley, and a set of J heads. Man that thing not only towed nice but got better gas mileage than the stock 318. I miss that van.

Sweet van!

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

Damn, I like that van. My GF was laughing at all the thumbs up I got at SGMP rolling thru the pits with mine. And mine is ugly!

Man I had some good times in that van. When I would jump on it with my girlfriend in it I would flip this switch that was mounted on the dash and tell her it was turning on the nitrous. 2 years later I found out the switch was actually turning on my reverse lights. I'll bet that messed with some minds.

I've got a 73 duster with a 318 600 holley, edelbrock intake, stock exh man and a single 2" exhaust and it wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding. I've checked the timing and adjusted the carb but it just sounds so flat, i swear it's one of the slowest cars i've ever owned. Lol

The AVS's adjustable secondary air door via the spring should be an easy adjustment. If it is not opening the door on the carb as delivered, it makes me wonder if the factory over tightened it or the engine just doesn't want the extra flow.

Take it down the road and listen for the opening and make note of the rpm of where it happens. 600 cfm on a stock engine is a lot. Not that it can't or won't use it all but by the time it wants the extra amount, it may be late in the rpm band.

Something to check. There should be a choke lockout on the secondaries,it may be misadjusted even if the choke is open. Wont cost anything to check.

I have the air door spring so loose, its about to fall open and it wont.

How do you change motors in a van, thru the passenger door?

That's how I did it and all went well. (4 bolts and the front seat was out) That was the first time I used a plate bolted to the carb flange and that really helped. I loaned my plate to a guy installing a 440 I build for my Dad's 1977 Dodge class C motorhome and he couldn't get over how well that worked out for him instead of the old chain set-up.

I just put a NOS 450 Holley Model 4360 on my 318. Throttle response was better than the 570 Street Avenger that was sitting on top of an adapter.

I was feeling really hopeful about the carb when I started computing mileage. Looks like this carb needs tuning as well, mileage dropped noticeably from the 570.

Some people have gotten the Model 4360 to work, but I'd stick with a Quadrajet or T-quad.

R.
