What rust inhibitor would you use to store (for a year or two) a block and heads that have just been hot tanked and are raw cast iron?

I've tried various things over the years and I think the best way to do it is to rattle can paint the entire engine block. Then when you're ready to use it you just redo the hot tank and it is ready to go.

If you don't like that idea then you can try a spray on Cosmolene but my experience is that those sprays don't last as long as paint and it still requires a trip thru the hot tank to get them clean for assembly.

I mix some 30wt oil and solvent in a squirt bottle and drown the part in question & on a block for sure squirt into the oiling passages (which are machined/most likely to rust) & blow em out. Best is to store the parts in a high heat/low humidity environment where the temp does not drop below the dew point (your bedroom). Barring that make sure the parts are drowned in the mix you use. EDIT too thin (too much solvent proportion) & there's not enough oil to do the job/too thick & it will not spray out of the nozzle. You want it on the thick side

I had a painted but freshly machined block for about 3 years. I lathered wheel bearing grease in the bores and easier to reach areas. I then sprayed heavy motor oil everywhere else. The motor is running fine in my car right now.

Anyone ever tried Boeshield?

There's another one out there but I just don't remember, just some pretty amazing pictures. Maybe Gibbs or something like that?

Could be wrong, I've been buying cars all day. Whatta sorry mess trying to get all paperwork together in the right condition and place.
