The am radio for my 70 challenger no workie...I am bench testing the beast and when hooked to power I can turn the thing in and get a pop through the speakers... Then beyond that no sound or static..any idears?

Time to send it out for repairs.

I might end up going that route...but that seems to be the answer everywhere on the net..I'd like to know what the actual issue is...I ordered the sams ar manual so I could look at the schematics

We service alot of 1970-71 E body Bendix AMs (I am finishing one up tonight as a matter of fact, and have 3 more scheduled for next week) My senior technician has been servicing car radios since 1965 , so he has 50 years experience in the field , so he pretty much has the hang of it now .Your problem Could be any of a number of things .
It's hard to say over the internet or phone, what's wrong or could be wrong with your radio . Generally speaking, I would not recomend people try to fix their own radios . Most people end up doing more harm than good by swapping incorrect parts , parts that are not compatible, etc. Then we have to "undo" all those mistakes .However ,I am assuming in your case you have at least a few years of electronics troubleshooting ,test equiptment , a good source for the "correct" replacement parts,
and lots of 70-71 Bendix E body parts radios on hand . If you have those bases covered, you should have no problem at all with this.Good luck with it .

You do have an antenna known to be good,,,and you have checked antenna trim?

Unless you are a radio guru verifying power, ground, antenna, speaker is about all you can do. Beyond that give it to someone that knows the radio. They can clean, tune, adjust and repair.

Greg what is your turnaround time and is it possible to pm me some sorta quote? I am thinking just get it working and possibly adding an aux input jack..car is somewhat of a survivor so I'm not too concerned with cosmetic restoration just functionality

Turnaround time is generally 4 weeks on average depending on how many radios I have in at that moment .

Just got mine done by Greg. Stand-up guy with solid service. My radio was VERY clean with what appeared to be no issues at all. Turns out that Greg had to replace two capacitors. I was just gonna clean it up and put it in, glad I didnt. I would have been a little upset if my radio didn't power up my re-coned date coded speakers!

In my opinion, it's better to just send specialty things like that out to a professional. In the end you're gonna waste a whole lotta time and frustration trying to fix it to save a few bucks..

Really nice guy with fast, affordable service... I wanna say 3 years ago I paid like 35-45 bucks a speaker...

Keep in mind that he only re-cones the speakers... He's technically not a "restoration" service, so no finishes will be replated.

I'm happy with the outcome... I can see by the quality of craftsmanship they will work great...
