Just wanted to offer some guidance here before anyone drops big bucks on the "correct" alternator or starter core. Hopefully others will throw in their 2 cents. First, be very wary of buying any core without high resolution, detailed pictures. Many sellers are simply misinformed or ignorant when it comes to knowing what they are trying to sell you. Original Chrysler built alternators since 1965 come with a raised rib rear center bearing that is very distinctive (see the ICCA/MMC Detroit website for pictures). If it has the OE bearing then it is likely the core is original and "un-molested." If your core has a flat case rear bearing then look closely at the finish on the front and rear shells. Has it been agressively media blasted? This process generally removes most of the small details in the castings and renders the case unfit for a high value restoration. The alternator part number is STAMPED not cast into the rear shell or backhalf. Most e-bay sellers list the cast part number as a reference when selling cores. These numbers have nothing to do with the application of the part. Chrysler alternators have unique and distinct hardware and plastic parts. Most of these are no longer produced by modern vendors so make sure your core comes with these correct parts. An example would be the tan insulator used on the horizontal field brush and capacitor. Modern rebuilders/vendors use a white plastic instead of tan. Finally take a close look at the date code "clocks" on both the front and rear housings. They should always pre-date the assembly date - again STAMPED not cast - in the rear shell. The front cast date may differ by several weeks or more from the rear shell casting date but again will always preceed the assembly date. Original pulleys look nothing like the modern reproduction and will have the original part number stamped into the pulley front removal flange. They are expensive to find in good condition so ask about the pulley before purchase. It bothers me to even bring this up but recently I have seen alternators being offered for sale that have been purposely altered to bring more money. Inspect your core carefully for evidence of tampering with part numbers or casting dates. Hope this will help with your future core purchases. As mentioned above the MMC Detroit/ICCA website has very detailed pictures of original alternator cores.

Thanks, and good luck. I'll post some starter core info later.
