Looking for build up ideas for a 68 super stock engine. Car will be an automatic mostly street driven and run on 94 octane. I want to use a factory type cross ram.
Thanks

Well the last one was a 484 Hemi with 4.15 stroke and 4.310 JE pistons and 11.6:1 compression on pump gas with Indy 426-1 heads ported by me flowing 400cfm, and WP Iron block...In its hey day it made over +700hp, but I detuned the cam a bunch for more street use as it tended to eat parts....So I removed the .738 cam and pulled the efi off it, and went to a .590 cam and an SV1 carb and it made 660hp...Went a best of 10.74 thru the mufflers on pump gas

EFI and big cam....

Small cam and SV1....

My current build is an 11.25:1 all aluminum 605 Hemi with Indy alum block and Indy Hipo heads, aka Canfields, and it has a mild .685 mechanical cam and will have the injection back on it. Depending where the flow numbers on the heads fall, we should see +800-850hp out of this one...Purchased everything from BG Racing.

I'm in the process of my first hemi build. Muscle Motors is putting together a 605 Callis/Oliver bottom end, and I have yet to select the heads. I was leaning towards a single dominator as I already have some money invested in N2O plates for this flange.

I started a thread on here and yellow bullet. Several people have posted their combos (most are significantly above my HP goal).

I can tell you seeing people race a Hemi is rare, and seeing people race a Hemi on N2O is like seeing an albino deer.. They still do it, but after spending all that money, its not like killing a SBC with N20...Heck even getting the basic parts for a Hemi can be difficult let alone what your building.

Basically with your combo, I see a couple choices, the Indy Hipo, and Stage V....

Thanks for the link. This is my first hemi build as well, and I want to be able to make good choices, that are within my budget.

I would suggest you buy and read Rich Nedbal's book on building Max Performance Hemi engines.

http://www.amazon.com/How-Build-Max-Performance-Hemi-Engines/dp/1613250746

Mine is a pump gas 572" World alum. block Stage V heads.

I didn't care for that book. I was expecting something like Andy Finkbeiner's How to Build Max-Performance Mopar Big-Blocks, but the Hemi book kind of fell short.

Mine will be at the track, but will likely without the bottle. My HP goals appear to be quite modest when compared to similar sized Hemi builds. At the rate I'm going I'll need a NHRA license and parachute without N2O. One of the MP or Indy crates probably would have been fine, but with the mixed reviews on this and other boards; I felt I could spend a little more and have a piece of mind. That some how turned into an aluminum 605.

Great info, thanks!!!

I'm a few hundred pounds lighter (3621 lb) with a iron wedge and factory K-member. I don't know how much I'll shed switching to Alterkation and this Hemi, but it looks like I'll be doing a chassis cert next year. Look for some chassis cert threads/questions from me after I get this thing back together.

I agree all the way. I read Andy's big block book first also. I did learn a few things and it was nice have some pictures. But the folks here have filled in most of the blanks.

I'm in the middle of building my Hemi. Its a 472. Stock iron heads, 10.5:1. Most parts came from ebay and Moparts so its been a pretty budget friendly build so far. I am in process of rethinking my cam choice and have several companies looking at specifying a cam for me.

I had Gary Stanton build mine. It's a world block 472. I stayed with standard bore and went with 4.125 stroke. This is a street motor that I just wanted a solid power plant that was a Hemi! They use Scat crank and rods. He also used Diamond pistons with 10.5 C/R. He used the new MP(Eddelbrock makes them if I'm correct) aluminum heads with 2.25 intake valves and 1.94 exhaust. I went with stock MP rocker gear. He put the biggest hydraulic flat tappet cam that comp grinds for him. I don't have the grind number handy, but it was a 108 LSA with around 580 lift and 249 duration @.050.. On top I have a street hemi 2-4 intake with 600 Eddy's. It dyno'd 583hp @6000 RPM. The cam should make power to 6500 RPM and since the Hemi's love RPM and hydraulic cams don't, we didn't pull any higher. The dyno pulls felt good with smooth power up to 6000. I wanted to be between 575-600 HP, and we seemed to achieve that. Gary seems to think we left some numbers on the table only pulling to 6K. All in all I'm okay with that.... Engine is going in my 70 Challenger with a Passon overdrive 4 speed, and a Dana with a 3.54 gear. So that'll be plenty of street pounding power for me!

I hesitate to post on a "race" forum but here goes. I have a early Siamese block (2000) Callies 4.5" crank, 4.375 bore, 10.75 comp with port matched MP aluminum heads. Cam is .246/.254 @ .050 .585 net lift on 112 separation, solid roller. Stage V intake with (2) Holly 750 carbs, TTI 2" headers. We dynoed the engine and it pulled 635 HP @ 5900 rpm. BUT when I got it home and installed in the car, it didng't feel right so I checked TDC with a piston stop and checked against the tab where the engine builder set the timing. Care to guess? it was retarded over 10 degrees! They dynoed it at 32 degrees? I put a vacume gauge on it, set the initial, welded up the advance slots etc. I am now running a TRUE 35 degrees total and it feels MUCH stronger!
Still runs great on 93 pump with vacume advance bringing the total to 44 degrees under light load with no detonation. Car weighs 4,175 empty, 3,000 stall with 3.54 gear and GV overdrive. Just a street car though. If I was going to race, I would have started 1,000 lb. lighter. Can't beat it though in summer with the top down!

Thanks for posting guys. I think this is the correct forum for this topic. I too will only be using my project for street use . So I really appreciate seeing street configurations.
