Has this been covered here before?
According to World's web site, their iron block is 340# while their al. is 200#.
Indy says their iron block is 290# and their al. is 133#.
I didn't find a weight for KB, and I haven't seen much info at all about the new HP blocks.
So, for a mostly street (with the occasional Friday Nite Grudge Matches at the local strip) engine, which block appears to be the best choice, as of now? Iron or al. and which manufacturer?
Already have al. heads and a World iron block. I am just wondering if I will regret having the additional weight of the World block up front. So first I need to know how much weight difference we are talking about. Especially compared to the 440 iron block and al. heads that I have there now. And is it really even enough difference to mess with going with a different block?
I would appreciate opinions and thoughts on this. My car currently weighs 3,450# with me and fuel.
Thanks!

My KB 4.5" bore street hemi block was 140 lbs. if I recall correctly. I also have a cast iron World block. Came at 4.25" bore, but I bored it out to 4.5"...probably took 30 lbs out of it, lol. Holy crap is it heavy. Never weighed it, don't want to break my scale.

Yeah, the World iron block I have now is the heaviest...by far. Just wondering if the difference in weight between the different choices is worth the time, money and effort to go with a different block.
I fully expect (and hope) to have to live with this decision a very long time. So, I just want to make the best choice.
Thanks!

Well my low deck KB with big cam is 127 My aluminum World Tall deck 60MM cam block is 144 All the World iron blocks I have weighed are 315-322
What is Indy's iron block? Did not think they made one, assume it is either an older mega block or World piece. FWIW I don't think anyone is making iron blocks currently, cause we could use one for the dragster but looks like we will be ordering a KB soon.

I just don't know if I would want an al. block in the street car.
Why not? 100 lbs. less weight on the front of the car a problem? That's the only difference. Well that and the fact that they are repairable if windowed and infinite rebuilds since you can replace sleeves.

Okay then. Sounds like al. may be the way to go. So is it Indy or KB? I know not to deal with Indy direct, so who would you recommend to go through if Indy were the choice. I am only about 3 hours away from Indy, so pick-up would be cool. But I have a KB in the Dart now and would prefer to support them. And then there is the price point. Much difference in the end pricing between the Indy and KB when all is said and done? Again, you thoughts and opinions would be helpful.

I have a KB in my cuda and love it, but it takes a while to get one from them. If I was going to get an Indy block, I'd talk to Todd Marsh at Marsh Performance. He's a member here...sasquatch.

I would ask how the car launches now with the iron block... yes the alum block has a few good points to it(repairable, lighter on the nose, and has sleeves) but at $5000+ is it worth the cost for the street.. make another 50hp to cover up the weight difference.. but this is JMO.... and I am a guy thats looks for any weight savings

Good points. With fresh drag radials, the Cuda will 60' in 1.51-1.55 area. I don't know what this World block is worth. But if it would be worth enough to someone that an al. block is not a lot more, then the al. seems like the way to go based on the opinions here. But if it would take too much money to move to the al. block, then keeping the iron block and spending a little more effort to make the extra ponies to pull the extra few pounds would make more sense. So I guess that I need to see what this block will bring and start pricing the Indy and KB.

My Cuda with the little 484 iron block Hemi would 60ft a 1.48...I can't wait to see what it does with an aluminum 605 Hemi....probably break something!

If it's anything like mine figure on it bending or breaking stuff...on second thought with your better heads, bank on it.Dave

$3500 Holy mother of gawd..I hope that was at least a NEW block that can go 4.500. That is alot of money for a block that still has plenty of weaknesses, (cap walk is still a big issue, and many are really thin at large bores BEFORE they get to 4.5)in the design....Holy smokes..And to think we have destroyed two of them trying to make decent power. Wonder what someone will pay for a collectable seasoned one for say a nice coffee table base
It was a new untouched block 4.49 and all cylinders .250 and better and yes it was sonic tested.
