Hi,
Went to start the 440 and had to use starting fluid to get it to fire.
Looks like hardly any gas was coming to the carb. Then let it sit overnight and the fuel filter was empty again. Why would the gas drain back? Now it will take forever to get it started again.

Thank you Joe

Bad fuel pump most likely. I would use gas to start rather than starter fluid. That stuff is hard on an engine.

recent problem? chronic problem? first thing I'd do is before I crank it, take off the air cleaner and look in the air horn & pull the throttle & see if you have several healthy squirts of gas from the nozzle

Gas drains back because there is a bad valve in the fuel pump. Replace the pump.

I suggest you look up the siphon effect then explain to us how gas in the carb bowl jumps the air gap above it to go back to the tank.

ThermoQuads do this.
These carbs are great when they are in good condition. Great mileage, great performance, but after years of operation, the Phenolic center warps and the seals at the base leak. Fuel doesn't just evaporate overnight, it slowly drips out and into the manifold. I have had this happen with several seasoned ThermoQuads.
All the Holley carbs I've had seem to retain fuel for several weeks. One of the reason that Holley type carbs start easier is because the accelerator pumps on Holleys are at the bottom of the fuel bowl. Even if the carb is down to 1/4" of fuel and the main jets are uncovered, the car can start. Carter based carbs like the AVS, AFB and ThermoQuad have a well for the accelerator pump off to the side. They are harder to start once the fuel level drops.
You'll need to respond with more info to get a more detailed suggestion.

If you read his original post you will see he said the fuel filter was empty.

Still wouldn't stop the fuel in the carb bowl from starting the engine. Empty fuel filters are fairly common.

Many times engine heat will evaporate the fuel in the carb. I would have the same problem if it weren't for the electric pump I'm using.
