I have the originals for my car and finally got some black wheels so I am soon going to pound on the dishes. But I don't want to dent them like I did some baby moons so many years ago. Is there a trick to getting them on or is it just carefully bang away? The car is here. Thanks, Kim.

I had a small bolt pattern set and I was always able to put them on with my bare hands by getting one side started and then just pushing on them. Getting them off is a bit trickier.

I put it halfway up the slope of one of the nubs on the wheel then(carefully) hit the dish on opposite side

Apply pressure w/your hands on the outside only. Don't cave them in

If it's tough going on, then try it on another wheel or first rotate it around it and it will sometimes pop on easier.

Apply pressure only at the hard bent edge of the cap, it's the strongest point...

The aluminum dog dish caps are very easy to dent. Like mentioned above, only hit them on the very edge. You can use a large rubber hammer. Best to get an extra cap and try it on the wheels.

Also, look at the caps before you put them on. Make sure the rim of the cap is nice and round.

put the one side of the dog dish on the nubs of the wheel and then just bump it in with your hand....it really is that easy...hit it on the outside of the dish where it goes to bend.

To remove them its just as easy. I found an easy tool to remove them with. Its something we all have in our toolboxes as well. Its a brake adjustment tool. Just put a cloth on the rim so you dont damage the finish, put the dog leg under the dogdish and apply pressure down and it just pops off...Presto....picture of the tool I used on my 70 Charger with dog dishes below.

I've had lots of Mpoars with dog dishes (cop cars) but they were mostly already bent up when I got 'em, so I never worried about it back in the day!

So, when we restored my girlfriend's Falcon

http://home.earthlink.net/~jimg185/

she found a mint set of dog dishes on eBay for it, and I bought this tool at Northern Tool

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_153766_153766

to remove them without banging them up. I did wrap a very thick layer of electrical tape around the shaft where it contacts the rim so it doesn't scratch the paint. This tool looks like it would work equally well on Mopar dog dishes, but I no longer have a Mopar with dog dishes on which to try it out.

Used to be, everyone sold these tools, but they're really hard to find these days. Used Snap-Ons show up on eBay sometimes, but they usually go for around $20, or they did back when I was looking for one of these.
