I need to locate some engine mounting bolts for my car so I thought I might just get some new ones while I'm at it. They are selling for $25 new. Am I missing something?? That sure seems like a bunch of money for them. What's so special to make them this expensive??

since i'm not a numbers guy it doesn't matter to me. I just go to the hardware store and buy hardened (grade 8) ones. then I discovered a local hardware store that has an unbelievable selection of stainless! so now when I take something apart, I replace with stainless hardware!

If its the bolts from the mounts to the block, they are fine thread (at least on mine) which resists vibration better. Beyond that, I don't believe they are anything special. When I did mine, I used an ARP kit that was pretty reasonable in steel.

Dont even need to be grade 8. 5 is fine and get fine pitch. The expensive ones probably have the M or factory vendor letter in them as off the line. Kinda like rosette rivets....

Poor wording on my part. I need the bolts that go thru the motor mounts to the k frame. I'll gladly go to the hardware store to get them, but I don't know what length and size. 3/8 or 5/16 and fine or course thread. Thanks

The original ones for both B and E bodys from 1966 on are 7/16 diameter course thread with a tapered point and tapered starter threads on the end that goes into the motor mount. I have one OEM one in the shop I can measure tomorrow and let you know the length on it. I would like to find another stock one but there is no way I'm paying more than about $3.00 max for one

Carefull on the stainless bolts. Most stainless bolts are not equivalent to grade 5. I had a chart somewehre that showed the strength of stainless versus the various grades. I was surprised. If its not a high load bolt, then you probably OK. But I would stick with grade 8s or minimally grade 5s for motor mounts.

I appreciate the updated information on this. Sounds like I need to step up to grade 8 bolts just to be safe.

Sometimes you get a motor mount bolt that decides it is not going to start threading, The last big block i installed I couldn't get the passenger side to start, So I ran to a buddy's house and got a factory style tapered bolt ( this was the passenger side, driver side worked with a hardware store bolt)which worked great after fighting the passenger side mount for a hour with a hardware store bolt

Yeah it's the tapered end and I somehow remember them looking galvanized. That plus the handling on each bolt must be many times that of the hardware store bolt. It's the same (costly bolts) for my brand f car.

WOW!! I didn't know that and of course had to research it. it seems they are equivalent to a grade 2 bolt! Luckily (I hope ) the mission has been limited to bolt on stuff like thermostat housing, carb nuts and that type of thing. i know i did my motor mount brackets in grade 8. well, mission aborted! thanks for the heads up!
